Hi, and welcome to Cameryn Moore's Smut Slam Machine, Theater Foundry, and Performance-Art Emporium! I do this work because the world needs it and I love it. <img height="334" src="https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/51980265001_b26fe76b68.jpg" width="500">Cameryn Moore, photo by Claudio Ahlers In the Before Times, I traveled around Europe, hosting Smut Slams in 12 regular locations across six countries, with several new stops that had been scheduled for 2020. After COVID-19 closed down international travel for a while, I pivoted Smut Slam to include a regular online Slam, as well as regular question/confession segments on Facebook. Whether in-person or online, I host Smut Slam with one goal in mind: to facilitate an encouraging, fun, open space where audiences of all types and amounts of sexual experiences can share their own stories. In a time when so many people are craving intimacy and community and togetherness, Smut Slam is more needed than ever. These events are sometimes humorous and often remarkably powerful in how they cut to the deep-down stuff--fear and joy and confusion and desire--all the things at the core of our human experience. There are many awkward yet essential discussions to be had in there, and Smut Slam has space for them all. (PS: Smut Slam is actually a whole global family of storytelling events. The first Smut Slam took place in Boston in February 2011; since then it has expanded to 18 branches worldwide and counting. All Smut Slams are trained and mentored by me in the Smut Slam ethos, so audiences get the same awesome, safe, and inclusive experience wherever they go for the show.) What else should you know about me? I’m an award-winning playwright/performer who is unafraid to drill down to the juicy stuff. All of my plays and performance works so far are solo, mostly because I’d much rather create the work I want to be in rather than look around for auditions and wind up getting pigeonholed because I’m fat. <img height="355" src="https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/51980120416_afb3e44d46.jpg" width="500"> Photo by Hoss, in Berlin (Feb 2019) Aside from the common factor of being solos, my full-length performances are a varied bunch. I used to write and perform only about sex stuff, but that’s changed a lot over time. Now my portfolio ranges from hard-hitting phone-sex dramedy (Phone Whore) to tense psycho-drama (nerdfucker) to my most recent work, Muse, a 1.5-hour life drawing session where I model, tell stories, and answer questions from audiences, who get to draw if they want. It’s an amazingly meditative, powerful experience, and one that I hope to tour with much more. My current work(s) in progress? The Dream Machine, an interactive installation co-created with audience members by way of interviews, sense memories, and artistic license; and Scanner, an immersive, near-future psycho-thriller about dreams as collective resistance or individual betrayal. I’m also an event producer. In plain language, if there’s something I want to see or experience and no one else is doing it… well, I guess I’ll do it then! Coming up in October 2022 I’ll be producing and co-curating YIKES! a celebration of awkward performance. (I know! Why is no one doing this already?!) And in November 2022 I’m helping to create the first True Story Fest here in Berlin; it features, you know, true stories. I love that shit! Oh, there’s more. I post up my lists of show ideas from time to time here on Patreon. They’re endless. In addition to my work in theatre and performance, I am a writer. A sidewalk pornographer, to be specific, possibly the only one in the world, certainly the only one doing it the way I do. I call it &quot;Sidewalk Smut&quot;: while touring with my plays, I set up a manual typewriter on my nights off and create custom erotica for people in busy bohemian or nightlife districts. Many passersby treat my &quot;Smut While U Wait&quot; signs with fear or scorn or hilarity, even hostility, but the others who stop and ask for a piece of smut receive a supportive, non-judgmental consultation that leads to a well-crafted literary creation with their authentic desires and experiences in mind. <img height="333" src="https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/51980402549_03d71348f0.jpg" width="500"> To make a long story short—”TOO LATE!” I hear you screaming—I’ve got a lot of pans on the stove. That seems to be the way I like to create and produce experiences for other people: I like to try things out, run ‘em up the flagpole, throw ‘em against the wall. But I can never guarantee exactly what will stick. Maybe I’m working hardcore on a tour, and then I have to set it down for, I don’t know, a couple of years of pandemic. Maybe there’s a concept I’m pursuing, but my original path dead-ends and I have to push through the metaphorical underbrush to try another approach. Maybe a bunch of stuff actually catches hold and now it’s all happening, everywhere, all at once! No matter how disciplined I am, creating and performing just doesn’t settle easily into a regular schedule. This inherent … wobbliness… to my work means that I often feel torn between pursuing those urgent creative goals, as hard as I can, and going after work or collaborations that might be more stable, e.g. more workshops, or more grants! I’ll be honest, I sometimes feel the little vicious flames of burn-out lapping away at the edges of my survival angst, and it’s not good. No matter what you may have heard about all real artists needing to struggle, it’s actually super bad for DOING art in a sustainable, self-nourishing way. How Does This Work? To counteract the wobble, here on Patreon I’m asking folks to donate something per month, whatever amount you feel you can give (and you can change that amount at any time). Maybe that comes out to the cost of a latté, a little soothing energy for my soul. If you’ve got more, then your donation might represent a good lunch at a diner—someplace with the good pickles—as a way of supporting this hard-to-pin-down work that I do. You’re fueling my creative fires, symbolically and literally. Why per-month and not per-thing? Back when I was blogging a lot (related to my phone sex work), I did ask people to donate for each blog post I put up, and frankly, it ended up feeling like a bit of a treadmill, but it wasn't a problem because I had a steady stream of material to work with. Then I stopped doing the phone work and my blogging went way down, but I was still creating, mostly shows that could take as much as 2 years to make it from handwritten first draft to the premiere. And the small chunks that go into this work—everything from writing to tour booking—are unpredictable and difficult to handle on a schedule. Rather than keep that all in my whirlwind brain, I decided to share it with my supporters. You can see backstage peeks, archives of promotional material, first-draft notes or readings, special accountability notes (for when I really have to get something done!).... Sometimes it’ll be a stream, sometimes a trickle, sometimes a flash flood, but my patrons are the ones who will know best what is going on. There are a few different levels of support to look at, and different types of access to behind-the-scenes, but it really just comes down to what you can do to support the work that I do to get my art out into the world. And because Patreon is basically a pooling medium for donations, anything, from €2 per month up, is immensely helpful.
