Episode 9: How to STOP Bribing Your Kids and What To Do Instead
11/1/2022
Shea Tracey Podcast
Episode 9 How to STOP Bribing Your Kids and What To Do Instead
This week's episode is on the key differences between Bribing and Rewarding your children and how you can use this information to get long term behavior change in your child instead of quick, only for the day fixes. Get long term behavior change by getting clear on what your child really wants and be able to deliver it at a rate that you can sustain. Working through behavior difficulties is more than just stopping behavior; it requires a lot of underbelly work. The steps and pieces needed in order for your child to sustain require more than just committing the action but really depends on their ability to persevere, maintain, and deliver the desired outcome. Making the connections between your child’s interest and desires also helps to provide rewards that they will actually work for and move them towards committing the preferred behaviors all on their own without any input from us.
Do you struggle with “bribing your kids” because they don’t want to do something for “nothing”?
Do you feel like the little rewards you give are not having as much impact as before, as if they’re beginning to wear off?
In today's episode, I share the 3 tips to reinforcing your kids without bribing, even if your kids are used to constant rewards!

Episode 7: Staying Calm When Your Child is “Out of Control”
Brief summary of episode: Maintaining your calm may be hard when you have a child that feels out of control. The best way to get a handle on the situation is to get a handle over you. Your child will follow your lead and stay within the boundaries you set when you are willing to follow through with them. We get them to do this by setting boundaries that we can follow through on and by those we are willing to enforce. Self -regulation requires that you stay present and in doing so you gain control over yourself so that you can best meet the needs of your children.

Do you feel like the smallest things can set your child off making it difficult to predict their behavior?

Main Topics
Topic #1 Self-Regulation: Ground yourself so that you are able to deal with the big emotions that our children have the grounding skills to process our feelings.
Topic #2 Keep Your Power: We do not join their chaos, instead we give them our calm because we have skills that our children don’t. We give them the space, the skills, the support, to deal with their difficult moments.
Topic #3 The Power of Tongue: Our voice becomes their voice. So we have to be able to see that our words are not left void. We want our children to hear us and use our words to support them.
Topic #4 Seeing Our Children as People: We acknowledge that we are both growing up at this time, me as your mother and you as a child. We can learn from them in the same way that they learn from us. Our children are having an experience completely different than ours even though we remember being that age.
Topic #5 Having a Full Parent ToolBox: Expand the list of skills that we use when dealing with our children and their problem behaviors. Some go tos, scripts, strategies in order to deal with their behaviors.

Brief summary of episode:
This is the first episode for the Shea Tracey Podcast set to highlight the principles of www.sheatracey.com. Bullet points of key topics + chapter markers
Topic #1 Managing and raising your children is not meant for getting from day to day but having the foresight to think about 10 years from now even in the moment
Topic #2 Don’t have your child have to return to who they are, this thing you have, let me show you when and how to use it. We have to be discerning in what we are trying to get our children to do.
Topic #3 The things we value, become the box we use to shape our children. In order for our children to fully lean into the beliefs of the first teacher (i.e. the mom) you have to be all in what we believe to be important. What you value shows up in how you do everything. We are showing our children what is valuable and what is important.
Topic #4 Our roles of teaching and learning, and parent and child is a spectrum that is constantly changing. We aren't raising adults, we are cultivating spirits that are having a human experience. I am giving you space to grow in whatever space that is right for you.
Topic #5 We don’t have to sculpt and mold, together we are here to be. This doesn’t have to be all work, we have the space to just be.
Topic #6 Our children are and will be what we direct and decide. As a mother we have to take the time to build the connection and release the pressure of the idea that we have to be in control. Our children can control themselves in the conditions that we provide.
