What does it mean — and why does it matter?


Your body operates through two main nervous system states:


Fight-or-Flight (Sympathetic Nervous System): This is your stress response. It’s designed to protect you — heart rate rises, breath quickens, digestion slows. Great in a true emergency, but when it’s constant, it leads to burnout, anxiety, poor sleep, and digestive issues.


Rest-and-Digest (Parasympathetic Nervous System): This is your healing, calming state. Your body can repair, digest, and feel safe. It’s where balance, recovery, and wellbeing happen.


🌀 Many of us live in a permanent fight-or-flight — caffeine, deadlines, overtraining, scrolling, rushing — and our body doesn’t know how to switch off.




Effects of High Cortisol in Menopausal Women
Chronic high cortisol levels can have several negative effects, such as:

  • Weight Gain: Especially around the abdomen, as cortisol promotes fat storage.


  • Bone Loss: Elevated cortisol can decrease bone density, raising the risk of osteoporosis.


  • Mood Swings and Anxiety: High cortisol levels can interfere with mood-regulating neurotransmitters.


  • Fatigue: Persistently high cortisol disrupts your body’s energy balance, leading to exhaustion.


  • Weakened Immunity: Prolonged stress can suppress immune function, making you more susceptible to illness.



Top Tips to Shift into Rest-and-Digest:

  • Deep Nasal Breathing
    Breathe in for 4, out for 6 – through the nose. This activates the vagus nerve and signals safety to the brain.


  • Walking Outdoors
    A gentle walk in nature helps down-regulate the nervous system.


  • Stretch, Mobilise or Try Gentle Fitness Pilates
    Slower, intentional movement helps shift the body into a more relaxed state.


  • Digital Breaks
    Step away from your phone and screens. Create stillness – even for 5 minutes.


  • Grounding Techniques
    Bare feet on grass, sipping herbal tea mindfully, or a 1-minute body scan all help reconnect you to the now.


  • End the Day Calmly
    A warm bath, legs-up-the-wall pose, soft music, or a short guided meditation before bed.
