Brilliant head-to-head battler Clash Royale has been a fixture of our homescreens for years – in fact we’re pretty sure we’ve played this game every single day since it launched in 2016.

Now, creator Supercell has rebuilt the social side of the game to make playing alongside fellow Clan members even more varied and rewarding.

Tap on the Social tab at the bottom of the hub screen to check out the new and improved Clan Wars part of the game.

Here, you and your clanmates clamber aboard a boat and sail downriver, doing battle to collect bigger and bigger rewards, all of which get shared out among your gang.

Each Clan War is a month long, and is broken into weekly River Races. The idea is to try to sail faster than the other Clans by winning battles in different game modes, while also attacking your rivals’ boats to slow them down.

You create four different card decks to use in Clan Wars, with no “overlapping” cards allowed. This means more practice with a wider range of cards, and ultimately a broader understanding of the game’s many, many card types and strategies.

Duel is one of the new playstyles in Clan Wars, a best-of-three showdown.

Before each battle begins, you take your pick from your four Clan Wars decks, but can only use each one once. Because your opponent is also playing with a different deck each time, you’re guaranteed really varied and unpredictable matches.

You must now also think about protecting your boat, too; you’ll be asked to set up defences and assign cards to your ship’s towers to make them as hardy as possible.

On the flipside, you can also attack other Clan boats; win and your vanquished foe will have to take some time out of the race to repair their battered vessel, which could give you the upper hand.

And what do you get at the end of all this? Even more rewards! In the last week of each month-long Clan War, the best Clans will advance to a special high-level arena to play Duels for additional trophies and chests.
