The Issue

While attending Edmonton Public Schools (EPSB), I often felt overwhelmed by the large class sizes. The anxiety of being packed into a classroom with more than 32 students made it challenging for me to attend school. It's not only unfair to students like myself, but it's also an immense burden on our teachers who struggle to provide the necessary support when they have too much on their plates. Many students are uncomfortable, squeezed into small spaces, leaving little room for effective learning and interaction.

Overflowing classrooms pose significant safety hazards. In case of emergencies, evacuating a room with too many students can be life-threatening. Moreover, numerous studies have shown that smaller class sizes directly correlate with better academic performance and improved student well-being. According to a report from the National Education Association, reducing class size can lead to significant improvements in student engagement and success.

Small classes allow teachers to give individualized attention, ensure each student is heard, and create a more conducive learning environment. Teachers can tailor lessons to meet diverse learning needs, foster closer relationships with students, and efficiently manage classroom behavior, which becomes increasingly difficult with larger groups.

Schools must understand that addressing classroom size isn't a mere preference, but a necessity for a safer and more equitable education system. Therefore, we're asking the Edmonton Public School Board to take immediate measures to limit classroom sizes to no more than 32 students. By doing so, educators can focus on enriching the quality of education and creating a safe space for students to grow and thrive.

Join me in urging the EPSB to prioritize student safety and learning by implementing a cap on classroom sizes. Sign this petition today to advocate for a change that supports fair and effective education.

please share if possible, as this is not just unfair to students but to staff members, they get overworked and can’t have a good environment to teach in if it’s overcrowded
