After Pastor Nannie Jefferies began visiting the incarcerated children of parishioners as part of the outreach of Maranatha Church in Spartanburg, SC, she discovered a new ministry. In 2014, she founded Angels Charge Ministry, an organization that works to reduce recidivism for women. In the years since, more than 500 women have been provided a comprehensive support system after leaving prison - empowering them with the tools, resources, and physical and mental care to live full, self-sufficient lives. The 2025 Mary L. Thomas Award for Civic Leadership and Community Change recognized Nannie's most recent efforts to build collaborative partnerships, resulting in more affordable housing options for the "Angels" completing the ministry program. The award was presented at the 2025 Spartanburg County Foundation Annual Meeting held on April 22, 2025, at the Chapman Cultural Center. The recognition includes a $5,000 grant directed by the award recipient to a nonprofit organization serving Spartanburg County residents. Nannie directed the grant to benefit Angels Charge Ministry.
