  • Hexthorpe Ings – Willow Spial Fence Building Day

    Join us as we work to construct a willow spial fence along the side of the footpath at Hexthorpe Ings. This day is a part of our All Hands on the Don Project.

Please bring your own packed lunch if you would like to stay for the whole day. 

    What are we doing: On the day we will be use trees we have felled previously from the site to create a willow spial fence along the site creating a living fence.

  • Winter Tree ID Shire Brook – Training

    Join the Don Catchment Rivers Trust as we are guided through the Shire Brook Valley by botany expert Gerry Firkins from the Sorby Natural History Society (check out their website here). Come along and learn about winter tree identification in this lovely river corridor. The event will operate via sign ups as we have limited spaces available. Priority will be given to existing volunteers but all are welcome. Please read the information and sign up using the Eventbrite link below.

    What to bring: Gerry will be leading the walk and there is no equipment needed. Please wear suitable clothing for being outdoors including sturdy shoes. We can provide wellingtons to borrow on the day if you’d prefer but please let us know in advance by emailing [email protected] to ensure we have your size. 

     

    What to expect: We will be walking throughout the Shire Brook Valley Nature Reserve, stopping to look at various trees. The paths are a mixture of paved and unpaved, there are some ascents/descents and steps so please wear suitable footwear. We won’t be covering a great distance as we’ll be stopping to look at lots of interesting trees, but please still allow for 1.5 – 2 hours. Those who need to leave early can do so. There are toilets at the visitor centre but this is not always open so please go before you leave home. Refreshments will be provided by DCRT at the end of the walk, biscuits included!

  • Rother Rec (Lincoln Street) – Clean Up

    Join the Don Catchment Rivers Trust as we help to clean up along the river Rother. If the river levels are low enough and there is litter to remove from the watercourse then we will get in using waders and life jackets. If not, we will stick to the footpaths, the banks and the woods to conduct our litter pick. Toby Perkins MP will be joining us on this session.

  • Nature Counts: Wardsend Cemetery Bird Survey

    Sheffield & Rotherham Wildlife Trust, DCRT and the friends of Wardsend Cemetery have teamed up to collect Data for Nature as part of the Heritage Lottery Funded Data for Nature project.
    We’ll be hosting monthly bird surveys in the Cemetery and on the riverside to help collect data and monitor birdlife in the area. If you have birding skills we’d really appreciate your help surveying, or if you are a beginner come along to practise your skills!

  • Denby Dale – Clean Up

    When: Thursday 19th March 2026, 10am-1pm.

     

    Where: We will be meeting round the back of Hartcliffe Mills where there is easiest access to the river. We have permission to meet round there and the DCRT van should be visible. We don’t have the permissions for more than one vehicle to park there so if driving to site, please park elsewhere (such as on Wakefield Road) and walk through the Mills car park and round the back (see red dashed line in screenshot below for walking route through the site).

  • Wetland Bird Survey – Fishlake

    DCRT will bring the clipboards, survey forms and identification sheets.

     

    What to expect: Identifying wading and wetland birds can be tricky, so please ask if you are unsure and share your knowledge with others if you know any tips and tricks! These events are great opportunities to practise and learn birding skills, as well as contributing to the BTO’s Core Counts records (read more about core counts here)

The site involves two bridges (one over the railway/tram and one over the canal) so a note to consider the height of the bridges and fitness required to carry bags over both bridges. We will have a break at 11:30 am for refreshments and biscuits, provided by DCRT.
