Spanish RV 1909 Bible (SPARV09)
Overview
The Reina-Valera 1909 is a landmark revision of the Spanish Protestant Bible, standing in a tradition that begins with Casiodoro de Reina’s 1569 “Biblia del Oso” — the first complete Bible translated into Spanish from the original Hebrew and Greek texts. [1] Reina, a former Hieronymite monk who fled Spain during the Inquisition, published his translation in Basel, Switzerland after twelve years of work. [1] In 1602, Cipriano de Valera published a revision that became the standard Protestant Spanish Bible, and subsequent revisions were issued by the British and Foreign Bible Society and the American Bible Society. [2] The 1909 revision was the most extensive to that date, with over 100,000 changes in spelling and language modernization; it was overseen by a committee chaired by Henry Thomson, using the Nestle Greek text as approved by both Bible Societies. [2] [3] The Reina-Valera 1909 served as the primary Spanish Protestant Bible until it was largely superseded by the 1960 revision. [2]
