Turkish Kutsal Kitap (TURBST)

Overview

The Kutsal Kitap Yeni Ceviri (“Holy Book, New Translation”) is a modern colloquial Turkish Bible produced cooperatively by the Bible Society in Turkey, the Translation Trust, and Yeni Yasam Yayinlari. The translation team included Ali Simsek, Behnan Konutgan, and Mahmud Solgun, with translation consultants Rev. Dr. Manuel Jinbachian and Dr. Krijn van der Jagt [1]. The project was prompted by dramatic changes in the Turkish language during the 20th century: government-led language reform removed many Ottoman-era Arabic and Persian loanwords, rendering older Turkish Bible translations difficult for modern readers [1]. The New Testament was published first in 1989 under the title “Incil: Incil’in Cagdas Turkce Cevirisi” (The Gospel: Contemporary Turkish Translation), with one journalist describing the result as text that “flows like music” [1]. The complete Bible, including both Old and New Testaments (Eski ve Yeni Antlasma: Tevrat, Zebur, Incil), was dedicated on October 21, 2001, and underwent minor corrections in 2008 [1][2].
