Udi Proverbs

Udi Proverbs (UDIPRO)

Overview

The Udi Proverbs is a 2018 Scripture portion containing the Book of Proverbs in the Udi language, published by Wycliffe Bible Translators. [1] Udi is a Lezgic language of the Northeast Caucasian family, spoken primarily in the village of Nij in the Qabala district of Azerbaijan. [2] The Udi people are considered direct descendants of the ancient Caucasian Albanians, and their language is regarded by linguists as the closest surviving link to the Caucasian Albanian language, which had its own script used primarily in biblical and bureaucratic texts from the 5th century. [2][3] The Udi were among the earliest peoples in the Caucasus to adopt Christianity, with their king Urnair converting in 313 AD. [3] An earlier Udi Scripture translation, the four Gospels in the Vartashen dialect, was published in Cyrillic script by Mikhail and Semyon Bezhanov in 1902. [4] The 2018 Proverbs translation represents continued modern Scripture translation work for this small but historically significant language community. [1]
