Apple TV Streaming Quality Drops After 20–40 Minutes

Hello,

I am having a problem with streaming quality on Apple TV 4K (3rd generation) and would like your help.

When I watch movies, the video quality is good at first, but after about 20–40 minutes the quality drops significantly. On my big TV screen, the picture becomes very poor.

What I have already checked:

  • I changed internet providers, but the same problem happens.
  • I have fiber optic internet with 500 Mbps download / 500 Mbps upload.
  • I enabled the developer tools and I can see the streaming bitrate dropping to around 6 Mbps, and sometimes even 2 Mbps.
  • If I change something during playback (for example, the movie language/audio track), the quality becomes good again and the bitrate returns to more than 17 Mbps, but only for another 20–40 minutes.

I also checked the Apple TV system logs and saw an error related to memory. I have already sent a report to Apple.

I have three questions:

  1. Can you help me diagnose and fix this streaming quality problem?
  2. Does Apple have any bandwidth quota / bandwidth limit for Apple TV streaming that could affect quality during longer playback?
  3. In the developer options, the displayed time seems incorrect. How can I change/correct the time there?

Thank you for your support.

Best regards,

RR

I am not aware of any cap and have not experienced any issue during playback in the years using the service for personal and forum testing purposes.

Was the Speedtest app used on the Apple TV to ensure it is getting the appropriate connection? If on wifi and using an Apple TV equipped with ethernet try connecting that way to see if the issue persists.

Reboot Apple TV and router
