In the context of a debate tournament, a clash (otherwise known as a
conflict or a scratch) exists where an individual believes that:
1. They cannot be impartially adjudicated by a particular adjudicator (for debaters)
2. They cannot impartially adjudicate a particular team/set of teams (for adjudicators) or
3. They cannot impartially adjudicate alongside another adjudicator (for adjudicators)
All institutional clashes are automatically registered. You do not need to submit them.
Clashes
can exist for either positive or negative reasons; both are of equal
importance in weighing whether a clash exists. The following is a list
of *mandatory* clashes that one must declare:
1. Having been in a past or current intimate relationship with the individual in question
2. Having been a roommate or flatmate with the individual in question
3. Having regularly debated together with the individual in question in the past (not once or twice)
4. Having coached, or been coached by, the individual/team in question or
5. Severe interpersonal clashes (including past equity issues)
Clashes do not exist in the following circumstances (list not exhaustive):
1. You do not like someone (eg : someone ‘annoys’ you)
2. You don’t like the arguments that someone makes
3. You think it is tactically favorable to clash a judge
4. You have been told to clash a judge for strategic reasons or
5.
You think someone is a bad judge, or disagree with a decision made by a
judge (either in a past tournament or at this tournament)
A few clarifications:
1.
Submit clashes ONLY through this form. Every clash needs to be verified
by the Equity Team. DO NOT approach the CA or the Tab team.
2. This
form is only accessible to the members of the Equity Team. We will only
share the clashes where necessary (tab), but will not be sharing the
circumstances behind the clashes filed.
3. If you have multiple clashes to declare, fill out this form multiple times; once for each clash.
4.
A copy of your submission will be emailed to you. You MUST use the same
email address as provided in individual registration; submitted clashes
which do not have a matching email will take significantly longer to
process.
