I have recently bought GitHub Pro subscription and I receive:

"You have exceeded your premium request allowance. We have automatically switched you to GPT-4.1 which is included with your plan. [Enable additional paid premium requests]"

Why is that and how much more do I need to wait until I can use my allowance of premium models?
I have sign out, reseted copilot extension still nothing. What is this behavior and why is not written clearly stated somewhere that you cannot use it immediately?

This happens because GitHub Copilot Pro includes a limited number of premium model requests per billing cycle (for models like GPT-4o or newer). Once you hit that quota, it automatically falls back to GPT-4.1, which is included without extra cost.

It’s not a bug, and signing out won’t fix it — you’ve simply used up the premium allowance.

Your premium requests reset at the start of your next billing cycle (usually monthly from your subscription date).

If you want to continue using premium models before reset, you have to enable paid overage.

What if you've removed all budgets for Copilot but are still not able to use other models, repeatedly getting this message after every attempt:

In GitHub Pro, there’s a limit on how many premium/GPT-4.1+ requests you can make in a time period. When you exceed it, the system automatically switches you to GPT-4.1 (which is included) instead of a higher-tier model.

1. Your plan has usage caps.
2. Premium models above GPT-4.1 are limited per billing cycle.
3. The UI message isn’t super clear — but it means you need to wait until your quota resets.

How long until allowance resets?
Typically it resets at the start of the next billing cycle .... exact depend on when your subscription renews

Hello, thank you for answering!

I have not reached any of the quotas.
I have just updated my account from free to "Active subscription: Copilot Pro (free trial)" this is what I see in Licensing tab.
But in overview I have Copilot Pro.

I'm not sure why I'm not allowed to use any of the paid models.

it’s either trial cancellation behavior or activation delay...

there’s usually a short backend sync/propagation delay between billing and model access...

when you cancel GitHub keeps basic access until expiry but premium request allocation can behave oddly or be restricted

also its a great idea to later open a github support ticket in 99% cases they ends up being useful or just annoying in rest of case..

You've likely hit the monthly quota for premium model requests on your Pro plan. You can check your usage and when it resets at https://github.com/settings/billing. If you can't wait for the reset, look for the 'additional paid premium requests' toggle in your billing settings to enable overage.

This happens because GitHub Pro includes a limited number of premium model requests (like GPT-4o, Claude, etc.) per billing cycle. Once you hit that quota, Copilot automatically falls back to GPT-4.1, which is included without the premium limit.

There’s no waiting period after subscribing — the limit is usage-based. If you exceeded the premium quota (even through Agent mode or heavy usage), you’ll need to wait until your billing cycle resets, or enable additional paid premium requests.

Signing out or reinstalling the extension won’t change it since it’s tied to your account usage, not the local setup.

You can check your usage/reset date in your GitHub billing settings.

That's simply not true. I payed for extending (0,04 cents p/q) and nothing happens.
No answers from support no access.
