Verdict:

I have so many thoughts about this one and they are definitely a mix of both very good and very bad ones. Most of them time this is a marker of a very good book – giving the readers an intense emotional attachment to the book. However, this book just made me question my empathy levels because I know that the author meant for me to get attached to the character and feel their aches and pains but all this made me do is resent all the characters. So, in this aspect I give great credit to the author.

However, this is why a huge chunk of points was deducted from this is book is because of the plot. Ok, for the most part I am a vibe reader, if I like the vibes this book was giving, then you get high marks from me. In this case, this book fit right in my vibes until it was not. It started out well within my vibe, and as I have said, very well written: I know who wore was, what their problems were, and what they want to get resolved. I think the problem started when the plot became a rollercoaster more than necessary.

Yes, any reader/writer/lover of literature knows that a good plot has its ups and downs and necessary plateaus and a few good plot twists. However, if there is just too much of all of these elements then all you get is a very confusing plot. I do believe plots should be more like a rolling hill or sine wave and not an EKG read of someone nearing a heart attack. The plot was really turbulent that at some point I was looking for a reason to care. The plot should have been enough reason for me to stay and see to the end however with this one I felt like I need to go through the book to see it straighten out.

It was so convoluted and unnecessarily confusing that I needed to see to the end.

Why didn’t I just let it go and add a book to my DNF file? Well, as I said, the prose was good. Plot was to be desired. I gave it a chance. What can I say? I love a case.

This is why this book got 2.5 stars from me: got me all the feels but that feeling was anger.
