everything2, written by a feller who named himself alfimp.

alfimp's profile said:

This account was representative of The Alfimp Collective
(http://alfimp.freeshell.org), until it died. Now it's representative of
nothing and no-one but me, but I'm stuck with the name. Ho-hum.

Now for his main bit:

You have a sad feeling for a moment, then it passes

(idea) by alfimp August 8, 2002

Nethack taught me a lot of things. It taught me about frustration and
perseverance, about luck and fate, about addiction and obsession, about hope
and fear, even about the importance of exercise and healthy eating.

But most of all, it taught me about death.

My own death, of course, which I learnt will come when I least expect it,
when everything is going right for once - that when no threats are apparent
and I feel I can relax a little, it will be then that I choke over a tin of
spinach, or mistake a blue e for a blue o, or a pink h for a
pink h. It taught me that my life will flash before my eyes in the
last seconds of my life - a catalogue of newly understood possessions, of
attributes, of those I've severely wronged, and of moral codes I've followed
and broken. It also, of course, taught me that a single magic word uttered
on my demise will allow me to reincarnate as a youngster of my choosing.

Most of all, though, it taught me about the death of others.

You have a sad feeling for a moment, then it passes

How beautifully summed up. And that's it, there, in that one sentence, the
entire "grieving process" compacted into a line. The shock, for it comes
when you thought your friend was healthy and off frolicking on his own
somewhere nearby in the cave. Sure, you heard noises, but you assumed it
was just that he'd found a new temporary play-mate to maul. But this brings
you to. This has happened.

And then through the shock, your hand paralysed over the space bar, come the
memories. Teaching him to play fetch when he was only little. Throwing him
treats as he purloined ever richer treasures from unsuspecting shops. Even
christening him. And the time you realised he'd really grown up, and that
the roles had reversed. The time you knew you were going to die, when a
disembodied eye had you entranced as it hovered hypnotically before you,
such that the newt or xan pecking at your leg couldn't distract your
attention, though with each click of the clock you watched, mouth agape, as
your life force was drained. When you knew it was the end and could barely
bear to watch. And then, then he came bounding out, your saviour, and
remembering your kindnesses destroyed the creature that plagued you, ate its
corpse in victory, guarded you till you came to. He saved your life, as you
saved his. You were a team. And now he's dead.

And yet you move on. As these thoughts come to a close, your hand descends,
and time unfreezes. You have a sad feeling for a moment, then it passes.
Then even that thought passes, and new more pressing messages replace it in
your consciousness. And life goes on, for you, and you find new pets, and
perhaps you even start to forget about your first - except occasionally when
little things remind you, like blowing a whistle and being surprised for a
second when it's her, and not him, who comes bounding to your side. But the
feeling is no longer sad. Merely wistful.

No, it's true. You have a sad feeling for a moment, then it passes.

15 C!s

Bananas Musical Songs With Lyrics And All.

Here are some first part of the 20th century songs by people who really love bananas.

That's your intro.

Now go and listen to these masterpieces!

1919-??-?? - Yes We Have No Bananas by Green Brother's Novelty Band.

1922-06-?? - I've Got The Yes We Have No Bananas Blues by Billy West; Brown; Hanley; King.

1936-??-?? - I Like Bananas Because They have No Bones by George Elrick.

1949-??-?? - Yes, We Have Not Bananas performed by Louis Prima & His Orchestra composed and written by Irving Conn and Frank Silver.

It may or may not be a euphemism for some thing or another, but I cannot quite make a connection yet.

Also, first time I see an Elrick outside of fiction.

The Great GNU Guile Conspiracy, Or - Why Fresh Auto Compile Instead Of Force Auto Compile Like Everybody Else?

I am losing me marbles.

GNU Guile has the most annoying command line flag.

Look, in all other commands you
--force-something
when you want something done, to force the command to do something it wouldn't do, right?

So, when running a Scheme script with GNU Guile, GNU Guile would normally only compile the scripts once, save the results to its cache directory, and use those bytecode files in later runs.

But sometimes you want GNU Guile to re-compile all the the script files.

why?

From the GNU Guile manual:

Automatic compilation generally works transparently, without any need for user intervention. However Guile does not yet do proper dependency tracking, so that if file ‘A.scm’ uses macros from ‘B.scm’, and B.SCM changes, ‘A.scm’ would not be automatically recompiled.

So what do you do? You tell GNU Guile to
--force-compile
……… Sorry, no. You tell GNU Guile to
--FRESH-auto-compile
.

And I didn't quote the whole paragraph. Here is how it continues:

To forcibly invalidate the auto-compilation cache, pass the ‘--fresh-auto-compile’ option to Guile, or set the ‘GUILE_AUTO_COMPILE’ environment variable to ‘fresh’ (instead of to ‘0’ or ‘1’).

See how even they phrase it?! "To forcibly invalidate"! They know what's the right phrase. Force. You force it to do what it wouldn't.

Oh, and the cherry on top:

6b480ced9c31be3106e675b51afb2dfa4245bd03

Do you know what it is? Do you?!

Here's a hint:

- ** Added --force-auto-compile option

These visualisations are pretty. They can also visually show musical patterns hidden to untrained idiots like myself.

Visual visualisations visually visualise... blah!

A nice musical bit he visualised is the Frog Round. A "round" is a special kind of music where the same bit of music is played at different pitches, but each pitch is playing a different part of the same music from the other pitches. Don't ask me. When he sit he stand (almost)
When he walk he fly (almost)
When he talk he cry (almost)

He ain't got no tail, neither, hardly
He sit on what he ain't got hardly

The visualisations.

By Stephan Malinowski AKA Smalin AKA Musanim. See if you can spot it.

Brother sent me a 90 minutes documentary (read: opinion piece).

It was made entirely of stock footage and named "How Comedy Was Destroyed by an Anti-Reality Doomsday Cult" clearly (read: possibly) inspired by Adam Curtis's documentaries (read: opinion pieces) made entirely of stock footage - "All Watched Over by Machines of Loving Grace" and especially "HyperNormalisation". Instead of Adam Curtis's matter of a fact BBC English accented narrator voice, we have a stoner Murikan, which I am told is actually a Canadian, quipping along the way.

And he is using the term "hyperreal". It annoys me. The "hyperreal" is a weird neologism the narrator names the normal word "delusion". It is a virtual reality people go into in states of crisis. People who go into "hyperreality" (read: delusions) build their life around it and sometime have others for company, like an unfunny comedian opening a new comedy club just for him and his posse. In the video the narrator keeps talking about a cult leader (read: a famous podcasting comedian) opening a cult compound (read: comedy club) for his cultists (read: the famous comedian's posse and audience), prefering to believe in comfortable lies instead of harsh truths, followers pretending to laugh at jokes made by their dear leader that would leave normal people deadpan just to keep their cult leader's ego well petted and secure their position at the comedy club. As you already know, there is only one reality and many opinions each based on good or bad reasons. When you base your opinions on bad reasons you are deluding yourself, so when the cultists mentioned in the 90 minutes opinion piece go into "hyperreality" why not just call it "delusion" like a normal person?

The term "hyperreality" comes from a certain brand of pseudoscience called "Postmodernism". One of its well known problems is inventing words for words for which we already have words. The word "delusion" is one of those words which the new unecessary word "hyperreatily" was invented. The new words are often fancy long ones thrown into the mix as chaff, to confuse the reader into believing that a superior intellect had written it.

In closing, Postmodernism is trying too hard and needs to take some writing classes. It may benefit in reading this bit by George Orwell:

https://www.orwellfoundation.com/the-orwell-foundation/orwell/essays-and-other-works/politics-and-the-english-language/.

p.s. forget about postmodernism and all that crap! That's yesterday's news because Moldbug won! In the end of the video the stoner guy says J.D. Vance is one of Moldbug's avid readers and Moldbug's crap was hugely influential on the current Murikan politics. And even though Moldbug's crap was partially a sort of a reaction to postmodernism, postmodernism doesn't matter anymore, because Moldbug won! If you do not know who Moldbug is, it means we are doomed. So in closing closing, have a nice weekend.

p.s.s. Moldbug's Neoreactionary writing is at least on par with postmodernism's writing in terms of bad writing. They are dark mirrors of each other. The bad writers that killed liberal democracy. I like that. So in closing closing closing, have a nice evening.

A Fairly Ironed Out Working Example of GNU Guile's guile-quad-tree.

Added a fairly ironed out working example of GNU Guile's guile-quad-tree (https://github.com/Halfwake/guile-quad-tree/). researchers at the National Institutes of Health and the University of
Virginia School of Medicine.[1][2] Discovered using in situ cryo-electron
tomography, hemifusomes are heterotypic vesicular complexes marked by a
persistent hemifusion diaphragm and a characteristic 42-nanometer
proteolipid nanodroplet (PND). These organelles account for up to 10% of
vesicular structures at the cell periphery and often contain intraluminal
vesicles, but they do not participate in conventional endocytic pathways.
Hemifusomes are proposed to act as platforms for vesicle biogenesis via an
ESCRT-independent mechanism for multivesicular body formation. Their shape
has been likened to a snowman wearing a scarf.

Zdzisław Beksiński's Answer To Fermi's Paradox.

Zdzisław Beksiński's answer to Fermi's Paradox in the form of a painting:

<img src="https://kaka.farm/pub/memes/beksinski-campfires-life-in-the-universe-fermi-paradox.png" alt="A desolate foggy hellscape barely lit by a sickly orange sun.
