Day Trip to Kaikōura & Takahanga Marae
Day Trip to Kaikōura & Takahanga Marae
Takahanga Marae in Kaikoura is the standing place for Ngāti Kuri. The original Marae was built around 450 years ago, the current Marae built in the mid-1980’s and the Wharenui (meeting house) officially opened in January 1992.The wharenui, which was designed by the late artist Cliff Whiting, and the grounds contain a variety of major site-specific sculptures and other artworks by both Māori and non-Māori artists. Join us as our group will be formally welcomed on the marae, eat local kai for lunch and learn the stories behind the history, taonga and art works by artists including Bill Hammond, Michael Smither, Chris Booth, Ann Noble, Bronwyn Cornish and Neil Dawson. This is a unique opportunity to go on to the Marae. We will leave by bus from the Christchurch Art Gallery at 8.30am and return around 5pm. Cost includes bus, morning tea, lunch and koha.

March Speaker of the Month: Art experiences in NYC
Art Experiences in the Big Apple There are so many galleries to visit in New York and beyond – how do you choose? Two of our Friends, Charrette van Eekelen and Marianne Hargreaves, talk about their experiences of art in and around this extraordinary city! Charrette grew up living in New York and became involved in the art scene and Marianne visits her family regularly so they are familiar with the large public galleries as well as the smaller and specialist galleries. They offer a personal perspective on how they approach the abundance of accessible art in such a huge country. Image by Simone Leigh Untitled 2023–24. Earthenware, stoneware, and steel armature.
