Idiopathic Intracranial Hypertension (IIH) is a rare neurological condition defined by increased intracranial pressure (around the brain) without the presence of tumour or disease. It can cause severe headaches, nausea and vomiting as well as swelling of the optic nerves which can lead to permanent vision loss if not treated successfully. Additional symptoms of IIH include blackouts, pulsatile tinnitus, fatigue, visual disturbances, confusion and memory loss. In severe cases of IIH permanent disability and blindness can occur. IIH is an individual condition and for some people can be life changing. There is currently no care pathway, but we hope that in the future, research will determine this and find an effective treatment or cure. IIH UK is dedicated to providing sources of information and support for those with IIH and also all who care for them. We promote awareness and research.
