Preparing for calving season
Preparing for calving season
1. Pay attention to nutrition needs of bred heifers or cows prior to calving.Adequate body condition at the time of calving for young females and mature cows is important as it impacts stamina during delivery of the calf, colostrum quality, calf vigor, and also impacts subsequent rebreeding.

Fire risk and record temps tomorrow. Snow likely later in the week | Nebraska State Climate Office | Nebraska
Extreme fire risk tomorrowA strong system will move through the Northern Plains over the next 48 hours and a tight pressure gradient will develop with the deepening low pressure. This means increased wind across the state starting tomorrow morning and it will be particularly windy in western Nebraska. The strong west winds will bring in somewhat cooler temperatures compared to today but will also bring dewpoints down into the single digits. With very low RH values and gusty winds, fire risk will be very high in southwest Nebraska and the southern Panhandle.

TDN Translation: Understanding Energy of Forages
TDN Translation: Understanding Energy of Forages
Total digestible nutrients (TDN) are the common energy reference for both feed content and animal requirement, so how are the two connected and what can we know to better examine TDN of feedstuffs and use energy economically? The initial measure of energy begins with gross energy (GE), which is the term for all energy contained within a feed and consumed by the animal. By subtracting all the energy that passes through to manure from GE, you get digestible energy (DE). Digestible energy is the measure of energy converted into TDN within feedstuffs.
Do You Know the Difference Between 9% and 7% Crude Protein Hay?
Do You Know the Difference Between 9% and 7% Crude Protein Hay?
When feeding harvested forages to the cow herd, you need to know what you have in order to know what to feed. This is vital when faced with some of the challenges we have seen in the past couple years such as flood, excessively cold and harsh winters, and drought. Over-feeding spends money unnecessarily and can deteriorate your bottom line. Underfeeding results in thin cows, which can lead to calving issues and disappointing conception rates.

Budgeting Family Living into Cost of Production: Why It Matters for Farm and Ranch Families
Budgeting Family Living into Cost of Production: Why It Matters for Farm and Ranch Families
In farming or ranching, budgeting is more than just managing costs for seeds, feed, equipment, or labor. For farm and ranch families, the unique structure of finances often means family living expenses are often interwoven with the business. Budgeting family living expenses into cost of production is an essential practice that can significantly impact the financial stability of the family, especially during challenging economic periods when the operation’s income may fluctuate.
