Texas 4000 for Cancer is a student-led registered 501(c)(3) non-profit organization at The University of Texas that fights cancer by sharing hope, knowledge, and charity. Students spend 70 days biking 4,000+ miles from Austin, TX to Anchorage, AK on the largest annual charity bike ride in the world!

Who started Texas 4000 and why?

It was founded in 2004 by UT Austin student and cancer survivor Chris Condit. Having battled Hodgkin's lymphoma, he wanted to create a powerful symbol for the cancer fight and turn his experience into a way to help others.

The long, difficult ride symbolizes a cancer patient's journey. It allows us to connect with communities across the continent, share hope, and honor those who have fought cancer.

So you just bike all day?

Nope! The ride is our platform for outreach. We volunteer at cancer centers and hospitals all along our route. We also give presentations in local communities on cancer prevention, covering crucial topics like sun safety, nutrition, tobacco risks, and the importance of early detection. We focus on reaching remote towns that may have less access to this knowledge.

How does Texas 4000 build student leaders?

Throughout this journey, student riders gain real-world skills in fundraising, public speaking, and logistics, while also building deep personal resilience, discipline, and empathy. The goal is to create a generation of passionate, lifelong advocates who will serve the cancer community long after the ride is over. Many students have changed their majors and career paths to more cancer-focused fields after the ride.

What is your personal reason for riding?

I ride to honor my mom, who passed away from stage-four lung cancer in 2019 at the age of 49.

The years during her illness were the most difficult my family has ever faced, but what has stayed with me is the kindness of others. I learned that showing up for people is one of the most powerful things you can do, and I want to be part of the same support system I relied on so heavily years ago.

My mission began with my mom, but it has grown to include the countless others who have shared their stories with me, and I carry all of them with every mile. To read my full story, please see my fundraising page.

Where does my donation go?

Your donation fights cancer on two critical fronts. It funds vital cancer research at world-renowned institutions like MD Anderson Cancer Center and supports patient care services, like the survivorship programs at Dell Children’s Medical Center that help young patients and their families navigate life after treatment.
