Evaluation of Swallow Function Post-Extubation: Is It Necessary to Wait 24 Hours? - PubMed
We found it is not necessary to delay assessment of swallowing in individuals who are post-extubation. Specifically, the majority of patients in our study (82.2%) passed a swallow screening at 1 hour post-extubation.

Validation of the Yale Swallow Protocol. Suiter et al., 2014
Validation of the Yale Swallow Protocol. Suiter et al., 2014
The purpose of this prospective, double-blinded, multirater, systematic replication study was to investigate agreement for aspiration risk, in the same individual, between videofluoroscopic swallow studies (VFSS) and the Yale Swallow Protocol. Participants were 25 consecutive adults referred for dys …

Grimm et al., 2015: A Novel Risk Score to Predict Dysphagia After Cardiac Surgery
The incidence and impact of dysphagia after open cardiac operations is significant. This novel scoring system could lead to prompt identification of patients at high risk for postoperative dysphagia and potentially minimize the complications of aspiration.

Nienstedt et al., 2019: Predictive clinical factors for penetration and aspiration in PD
Self-perception of swallowing is no reliable tool for identifying dysphagia and questionnaires are insufficient for detecting previous aspiration. Consequent and specific asking for previous subjective aspiration signs is the single most important measure for identifying PD patients at risk for crit …

Pattee et al., 2019: Provisional best practices guidelines for the evaluation of bulbar dysfunction in ALS
We have identified specific clinical recommendations for each of the 3 domains of bulbar functioning, available for incorporation within all ALS clinics. Future directions will be to establish a formal set of bulbar guidelines through a methodological and evidence-based approach. Muscle Nerve 59:531 …
