The Psychology of Your Scrolling Addiction

Studies have shown that 77% of employees use social media while on the job. Why is it so easy to fall down the rabbit hole of content consumption? And what does it take to pull yourself out and get back to the work you want to be doing? In this piece, the authors discuss the results of a series of studies exploring what makes people more or less likely to get sucked into endlessly watching videos or looking at posts. They identify three key factors — how much media you’ve already viewed, the similarity of the media you’ve viewed, and the manner in which you viewed it — and argue that all three have the power to influence how appealing related content is likely to feel. Based on these findings, they suggest that if you’re worried about falling into a social media rabbit hole, you should take steps to reduce the similarity, repetitiveness, and relatedness of the content you’re consuming.

Why You Should Invest in Unconventional Talent
Why You Should Invest in Unconventional Talent
The importance of building diverse organizations has been well-established. Diversity is linked to greater innovation and performance, and research has shown that more diverse companies have higher profits than their more homogeneous counterparts. But building teams with different skill sets and life experiences requires intention. By designing inclusive hiring practices — and letting go of the notion that there’s one ideal candidate type for a role — you can create more opportunities for a range of candidates who are more than capable. It requires thinking beyond the confines of traditional hiring. Prepare for new hires who will shake up your worldview and challenge assumptions about career paths. And then continue investing in their growth. Together, you can chart an unconventional course toward an inclusive workplace that welcomes extraordinary talent.
Your Burnout is Unique. Your Recovery Will be, Too.
Your Burnout is Unique. Your Recovery Will be, Too.
While it’s up to employers to provide a working environment that prevents burnout as much as possible, new research suggests that addressing burnout once you’re suffering from it is a little more complicated. There are steps that organizations can (and should) take to support their employees, but the most effective measures to counteract burnout are generally driven by the individual. Specifically, employees should start by identifying the source or sources of their burnout, and should then take action by focusing on self-care, acts of kindness towards others, or some combination of the two. Most importantly, the authors stress that compassion — whether towards yourself or your colleagues — is a muscle that can be trained, and that developing and practicing compassion is the key to combatting burnout.
The One Skill that Helped Me Grow in my Career
The One Skill that Helped Me Grow in my Career
What do new employees need to succeed in today’s workplaces? A growth mindset. People with a growth mindset, on the other hand, tend to believe that their abilities can be built and developed over time. So how can one develop it? Don’t blame circumstances for your mistakes. Use the experience to learn about yourself and craft a better approach for achieving your goal. When faced with the unfamiliar, don’t run or hide. You might fail, but a growth mindset shines through when you’re able to replace the word “failing” with “learning.” Don’t be hesitant about asking for help. When you are just starting out, everything will seem new. No one comes with all the expertise, so ask for help when you need it. The best way through an unknown situation is going through it, rather than avoiding it or feeling let down by it.
What a Year of WFH Has Done to Our Relationships at Work
What a Year of WFH Has Done to Our Relationships at Work
More than a year into the Covid-19 pandemic and WFH, new research from Microsoft shows that employees and teams are becoming much more siloed. In particular, connections with people outside our immediate teams has shrunk dramatically, leading to fewer places to connect around innovative ideas and fewer opportunities to build social capital. Further, this trend is making employees feel lonely and isolated. To help address this issue, leaders should focus on being proactive about connecting employees across the organization, make space for connections outside official meetings, encourage and reward social support, and improve the structure of meetings.
