A threatened population of Chinook salmon will get a major boost from significant restoration work in the Nootka Sound region of Vancouver Island. The new project is improving spawning habitat at the outflow area of Muchalat Lake, a remote area about 90 kilometres west of Campbell River, and is a collaborative effort spearheaded by Nootka Sound Watershed Society, Ecofish Research, a Trinity Consultants Canada team, Mowachaht/Muchalaht First Nation, and the Pacific Salmon Foundation.
How tech is driving innovation for salmon
How tech is driving innovation for salmon
Tracking thousands of unique salmon populations – and the factors affecting their survival – across B.C. and the Yukon is an extraordinary challenge. Today, innovative technology like artificial intelligence (AI), tracking chips, and drones is helping close the gaps. In the face of growing climate threats and budget constraints, these tools are helping expand monitoring capacity and gather the data needed to drive salmon conservation.

New data highlights crisis for Yukon salmon
New data highlights crisis for Yukon salmon
The Yukon River is home to some of the world’s longest-migrating salmon, travelling more than 3,000 kilometres through the Bering Sea and Alaska to reach their spawning grounds. But the Chinook, chum and coho that undertake this journey have faced steep declines in recent years — resulting in fisheries closures and deep consequences for the communities that rely on salmon for food, culture, and identity. New data and status assessments from the Pacific Salmon Foundation (PSF) now sharpen our understanding of how Yukon River salmon are doing, and where they are most at risk. Of the 20 unique groups of salmon – known as Conservation Units (CUs) – 16 are struggling and four are data deficient.

Heavy rains are replenishing salmon-bearing streams across B.C. after a season marked by extreme drought, high temperatures, and record-low flows. As drought impacts on salmon escalate, partners are working year-round to get ahead of future dry spells in vulnerable watersheds and enable faster, salmon-smart responses. The Pacific Salmon Foundation (PSF) and the Province of B.C. are piloting a rapid drought assessment protocol that would help local stewards track and report on stream conditions in a unified way – and accelerate emergency interventions.
