If you are reading this, you presumably are asking the question – is there a research project that I can do?
The easy answer is – there always is! The caveat, however, is – is there a feasible/quick research project that I can do given my current resources/constraints?
On this page, I present to you some research project methodologies that, if applied to the right topic, could be impactful and could be feasible given limited resources/constraints.

Overview of studies, by difficulty

Fragility Index

Fragility index analysis allows for re-analysis of a published randomized controlled trial. In order to conduct it, the randomized trial must report on binary outcome (yes/no data, such as whether patient achieved outcome or not) and there must be a significant difference between the two arms.
The analysis then quantifies the robustness of the results, with a higher number indicating more
robustness.
With the analysis, a letter to the editor/research letter can be written and attempted for publication.

The general steps are:
1. Identify a randomized controlled trial, reporting on binary outcome with a significant result
2. Create a 2x2 table of events and non-events

Cumulative Meta-Analysis

Cumulative meta-analysis allows for re-analyzing of a meta-analysis, to observe how the literature has evolved over time. Typically, this requires a meta-analysis to have many studies reporting on each outcome, with studies published over multiple years. In order to conduct it, one needs to be able to note down the data on the forest plots and then determine the initial publication date for each individual study.
With a cumulative meta-analysis, one can determine the evolution of literature. This can be written
and submitted as a secondary cumulative meta-analysis.

The general steps are:
1. Identify a meta-analysis, preferably one with many studies reporting on each outcome and with high heterogeneity
2. Gain access to all the individual studies of the meta-analysis, to note the original publication date
3. Create a spreadsheet, noting the effect size for each outcome per study and the publication date/year
4. Analyze

Meta-Regression

Meta-regression allows for re-analyzing of a meta-analysis, to determine if there is any difference in outcome by a continuous variable (ie a variable that is numerical, such as age). Typically, this requires a meta-analysis to have many studies reporting on each outcome and with high heterogeneity. However, practically this can be done as long as there are many studies reporting on an outcome. In order to conduct it, one needs to be able to note down the data on the forest plots, and then access the individual studies to extract the additional information (ie mean age for each study, the percentage of female enrolled in each study).
With a meta-regression, it can identify that certain subgroups have similar or difference expected effect, compared to the larger population. A secondary meta-analysis/meta-regression can then be written and submitted.

The general steps are:
1. Identify a meta-analysis, preferably one with many studies reporting on each outcome and with high heterogeneity
2. Gain access to all the individual studies of the meta-analysis
3. Create a spreadsheet, noting the effect size for each outcome per study, and continuous variables of interest (ie age, percentage female)
4. Analyze
