Sovietica: An Interview with Caroline Clark
Sovietica: An Interview with Caroline Clark
Sovetica grew slowly over many years. It started back when I was living in Moscow in the early 2000s, Andrei showed me some stereo slides he had made in the late ‘80s. I talk about them at the end of the book. They fascinated me. How you peer into the viewer and look into these pictures of the past. You have to hold them up to the light and then they come alive. Rowena Macdonald interviews Caroline Clark, author of Sovietica.

Dirty Lingerie
Patrick was a connoisseur of women’s underwear. The first time Katy had taken her clothes off in his presence or, rather, the first time Patrick had ripped them off her, he’d been brought up short by her utilitarian bra. ‘Oh.’ ‘What’s the matter?’ She looked down at the overwashed, greying straps and the cups that were so solid you could pretty much drink tea out of them. ‘I wasn’t expecting this to happen.’ Her gesture took in the bedroom, the bed and their proximity upon it. She grimaced apologetically. ‘It’s OK.’ Patrick had the expression of a man who was going to plough on despite the almost insurmountable difficulty presented to him. Read an exclusive extract from Rowena Macdonald's work-in-progress novel set in a Selfridges-style department store.
