As we grapple with unseasonably cold temperatures and the remnants of Snowmageddon 2026, it seems difficult to accept that spring break is right around the corner.

Free Legal Resources
Free Legal Resources
As the middle of the semester approaches and the cold winter breeze lingers, it's the perfect time to grab a blanket and cozy up at your computer to enhance your legal research skills. While you may already be familiar with major research databases like Westlaw, Lexis, and HeinOnline, have you considered what to do if you don't have access to those resources? The free legal resources at your disposal may be more helpful than you think. Why Should I Care About Free Resources?

We’ve Caught the Love Bug
We’ve Caught the Love Bug
Happy Valentine’s Day! We understand that, as both law students and lawyers, it is hard to set aside time for love. Finding or maintaining relationships (of any kind, really) in this profession can be difficult. You have a tremendous number of tasks to complete, and not to mention the high stress, so let the Law Library research for you this time. *winks*
Researching Private International Law
Researching Private International Law
Private International Law is the body of law that governs relationships between private individuals and entities across national borders. Its central concern is “choice of law” or the determination of which nation’s laws govern particular legal matters. Those matters may involve commercial transactions, such as cross-border sales and investments, family law issues (marriage, divorce, and child custody), or even tort actions if the parties involved reside in different countries.

A belated Happy New Year, and welcome back for the spring semester! We hope you enjoyed the extra time off and that you recharged your spirit for this semester. By the time this blog post goes live, many of you will have finished week one of thirteen (or 7.7% of the semester). Here are a few reminders about the services provided by your friendly, knowledgeable, and always service-oriented law library staff:

Happy Halloween!
Happy Halloween!
Happy Halloween from the Law Library! We hope between classes and homework you are finding some spooky time for yourself. The Mental Health Club is painting pumpkins, and your Law Librarians are handing out trick-or-treat bags on Thursday, October 30th, outside room 279. It will be a howling good time.

Directed Research at RWU Law: Tips for Success
To graduate from RWU Law, each student must complete the school’s writing requirement “under the direct supervision of a professor or director of an institute” during which the student “must write an individually authored paper that reflects substantial legal research; presents a legal argument that is well-developed, organized, and supported; is at least 5500 words long; and is of sufficient quality to earn a grade of ‘C’ or higher.”

Each summer your law librarians get the opportunity to attend the annual conference and meeting of the American Association of Law Libraries. This year it was held in Portland, Oregon, where we delightedly explored why the city’s unofficial motto is “Keep Portland Weird.”

Welcome (back) students, faculty, and staff! The Roger Williams University Law Library staff is excited to get to know the 1Ls students as they begin their law school journey. We are also eager to welcome back the 2L and 3L students, a little wiser with legal knowledge and ready for new challenges.

Unlike the other members of the library, I can predict almost every hour of every day. I have a set schedule of to-do’s that rarely get altered except on special occasions like library or law school events. Without fail, coffee always comes first. Black – no muss no fuss – from our trusty Keurig in the staff kitchen. If you’ve ever visited my desk, then you’re familiar with my Care Bear mugs. I like to match the color of my mug to my outfit, a simple way to romanticize the day. Today’s color: green!

I may sound like a broken record at this point in this series, but my week is different every week. My work schedule sometimes mirrors the academic calendar. I am very busy at the start and end of the semester, and the middle of the semester can be busy with planning. You may think summers will be quiet. Nope, that’s when the large-scale projects get executed.

Week in the Law Library Life: Kathleen MacAndrew, Catalog, Metadata, and Archives Librarian
I have been the catalog librarian for 30 years at the School of Law. Over the years, my responsibilities have changed to reflect changes in staff and types of material available to library users. When I first started as the cataloging assistant and then as the catalog librarian, it mainly involved traditional materials, like print, microform, audio, or video materials. Over time, that began to change as more titles were available electronically.
