The UTSA Student Biomedical Research Initiative operates as a 10-week NIH-funded summer program based in San Antonio, Texas. Undergraduate participants engage in mentored research across biomedical and health sciences domains including cancer biology, neurodegenerative disorders, regenerative medicine, and computational biology. The program builds foundational research competencies while creating pathways to graduate studies and bioengineering careers. The Cibolo Center for Conservation manages the Water for Our Rivers and Wetlands program within the Cibolo Creek watershed. This initiative partners with local ranchers and landowners to implement stream restoration, rainwater harvesting, native planting, and invasive species removal projects. The program applies evidence-based practices to address water quality and quantity challenges while supporting biodiversity. These complementary San Antonio region resources bridge academic research and practical conservation efforts. The UTSA biomedical engineering program provides laboratory-based scientific training, while the Cibolo Center enables hands-on watershed management experience. Together they advance both biomedical innovation and ecosystem resilience through structured learning opportunities.
