Clevatess: Majuu no Ou to Akago to Shikabane no Yuusha

Surrounded by four armies of dark beasts, five humanoid races strive to push the known boundaries of the world. Unfortunately, the 13 heroes dispatched to the southern region are easily wiped out by Clevatess, one of the Lords of Dark Beasts. Determined to get revenge against humanity, Clevatess bursts into the capital of the Kingdom of Hiden, leaving a trail of death and destruction behind him.

Although the situation looks desperate, humanity still has a chance to appease Clevatess' anger. Alicia Glenfall, one of the 13 heroes, is revived by Clevatess to help him raise a newborn infant, Luna, whose choices shall shape the fate of the human world. Although reluctant to help the dark beast at first, Alicia understands that Luna is the only thing that stands between humanity and complete annihilation.

Hiding himself by taking on a human form, Clevatess sets out in search for a wet nurse with Alicia and Luna. With Clevatess unwilling to reveal his identity, it falls on Alicia to slay all enemies that stand in their way. Meanwhile, the neighboring countries prepare to advance on the weakened Hiden, aiming to control the only forge capable of producing the heroes' weapons.

9/10: Perfect pilot, great plot and characters, minor issues
Tremendous pilot, one of the best pilots to any show, anime or not that I've seen this year. Great plot that mixes raw action, thrills with light hearted moments. Keeps you engaged and entertained throughout. It reminded me of overlord in some ways. I do get frustrated by idolizing monarchy that's really common, in all fantasy anime in general. At least they kept a tab on it in this one. That's why I gave overlord a 10 and this one a solid 9. The other thing that bothered me a bit was the rant about "heroes", but ... those moments of the female protagonist dying were really satisfying and took care of that. Overall, a great animie that could be binged on by young and adults alike.

Mixed Feelings

Clevatess has, for the most part, done a fairly ok job at filling the Ubel Blatt-shaped hole in my heart left by that story’s piss-poor anime adaptation. While my feelings on hyper-edgy dark fantasy anime are extremely mixed on the best of days, and this one certainly isn’t winning me over with its parade of cackling evil villains and brigands, the worldbuilding is certainly unique enough to at least grab my attention. Moreover, the fact that it’s competent at delivering information in a way that feels mostly natural and engaging rather than lore-dumping for minutes on end is one of its biggest strengths, which doesn’t ... sound like much, but it’s still much rarer than you would hope.
The cast is pretty solid, though few besides our titular demon lord stand out much, but the mainstays rarely ended up being annoying or poorly-written, and the master-servant chemistry that develops between Clevatess and Alicia did give it a little dramatic tension as our not-quite heroes bumble their way from the countryside to the halls of power. The same vague competence can be found in the art direction and animation. Nothing really catches the eye aside from its crispness, but it consistently punches slightly above average so I rarely disliked looking at it, and the last two episode just go full sakugafest in a very Nakamura kind of way, so that was fun as well. In the end, I can’t really recommend this one if edginess is a huge turn-off for you, but if you’re willing to get down with your inner middle schooler, then I think there’s some fun to be had here.

The animation is ok when it's present. There's some CGI and still shots but the picture won't be bothering you much. The OST is generic. The characters are generic, their development is inexistent. That's it for the positives.

The writing is offensively stupid. It's so bad Danmachi will feel like Lord of the Rings in comparison. The protag is facing off the bad guys? let's drop in a 6-minute long exposition dump mixed with detailed explanation of motives and life plans of the current villains. An evil guy surrounded by a swarm of insects crushes into MCs room and kills several people with bugs? I'd ... bet you didn't understand he's controlling the insects so here's a TED talk on his ability + some world history + some background of how he became a cringe ass bug kissing edge lord. I swear, it's so eye-rolling it's impossible to watch without 2x speed playback and some alcohol to dull the voice inside your head saying these are 5 hours of your life you're never getting back.

I've checked the source material's reviews and the stated problems are the same: all the world building is done in the most exaggerated badly timed cringe-inducing way possible, half of the dialogues are just exposition dumps, the author treats the reader as an idiot and overexplains even the most obvious shit. Why wasn't it possible to fix this in the adaptation? Mushoku tensei's doing just fine replacing the enormous amounts of world building from the novels with visual storytelling.

The author had a bunch of interesting ideas but they all fall short due to absolute inability to make them into a compelling story and that's not how entertainment works. Feel free to skip.
