”Scavengers” was a standout among many other extraction shooters I’ve played. It was the most fun I’ve had with PvPvE genre back in 2021.

This game had unique cold system, a frozen wasteland with blizzards that cause hypothermia, requiring players to find shelter or build warmth items, along with fighting hostile AI. It was somewhat similar to “Ashen Eye” mode from another game ”Ring of Elysium”. It was a central survival mechanic that acted as a dynamic, environmental "closing circle". Stepping on snow would leave traces and you could also slide down the snowy hill.

From technological perspective, this game was also pushing the industry forward. It was powered by Improbable's SpatialOS technology, which was intended to allow for large-scale, complex online worlds that could handle a massive number of both human and AI players.

With that in mind, they had a special, limited-time event called ScavLab held in May 2021 to demonstrate the capabilities of Improbable's networking technology with a massive player count. Game hosted 4,000 players in a single, shared environment. That must’ve been fun to participate in and a huge achievement overall. I totally respect this type of endeavours in gaming world.

The game ultimately shut down, but as you can already guess, it was mostly designed to showcase the capabilities of SpatialOS in creating a vast-scale, survival shooter blending elements of PvP and PvE.

At the end, developers Midwinter Entertainment got acquired by Behaviour Interactive and worked on "Project T", new secret title in "Dead by Daylight" universe, which unfortunately got cancelled as well in 2024 and studio shut down along with it.
