Great game with concerningly terrible balance.

While monster HP values remain in the same ballpark as World's on launch, the addition of wounds means you're essentially fighting perpetually tenderized monsters DPS-wise. In addition to essentially doubling (sometimes tripling) your damage output, wounds have a knockback effect. They also allow you to execute big flashy attacks, which also have a knockback, or sometimes an outright stun.

Break enough wounds and watch as the most fearsome monster helplessly drops to the ground before you, giving you a huge window to wail away, cut off tails and open new wounds as your reward. Where in previous titles you had to put in some work to get such a topple, now it happens nearly every minute. Most prominent early on, it really diminishes the enjoyment of the early game.

In addition to letting you execute big wound breaking attacks, focus mode also lets you aim every attack whenever you please. In theory this is a nice little QOL feature, in practice it means you get to shut off your brain and play like it's a GoW title.

All of the above things added together cut hunt times down by half at the very least, letting you plow through every monster with very little thinking involved. It gets a little better when you reach High Rank, but not by much. And don't get me started on multiplayer.

Now with the exception of performance (which every other review seems to have a detailed write up on), everything else about the game is an upside: the areas are big, open and relaxing with the option to change the weather and time of day at any point, the monster lineup is very strong, the endemic life is a treat to observe and capture AND you get a cool chicken for travel.

I just hope that Capcom significantly nerfs wounds: reduce their build up on attack and their impact once broken (or remove the stun/knockback outright), because in their current state they are super unhealthy for the game.
