Join us in Leeds on 13-15 September 2026 for our landmark 40th anniversary conference, where we’ll explore how advocacy and innovation are breaking down barriers in augmentative and alternative communication.

We look forward to welcoming you to the historic city of Leeds for an exciting event packed full of informative presentations, inspiring stories and insight into the advancing world of Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC).

Over two inspiring days, we’ll celebrate four decades of progress while looking boldly toward the future. Our theme, “Communication Without Limits,” reflects our commitment to ensuring that everyone has a voice, regardless of the challenges they face.

Limitless Legacy – Reflect on 40 years of achievement through pioneer interviews and historical perspectives.

Keynote Speaker

Jeff Higginbotham PhD

Director of the Communication and Assistive Device Lab, University at Buffalo, Buffalo, NY, USA

  • Looking at AAC Through Time and Interaction: Jeff Higginbotham discusses a simple but powerful idea: communication technologies don’t just help people say things—they shape how quickly, smoothly, and naturally people can take part in everyday conversation.  He asks, if conversation is central to being human, how have AAC tools evolved to support better real-time connection with partners—and what priorities should guide what comes next?

I earned my PhD in Comparative Studies of Human Social Interaction from the University of Wisconsin–Madison in 1985. Since then, I have spent most of my career at the University at Buffalo studying the conversations of people who use communication aids, with the goal of developing more socially responsive communication technologies. In recent years, my work has focused on the use of artificial intelligence in augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) and its potential to better support real-time interaction.
