The dangers of scammers connecting to your computer
Online scams can start in many ways — fake virus alerts, phishing emails, sponsored ads, or scammers pretending to be trusted organizations like your bank. No matter how the scam begins, many of them lead to the same dangerous tactic: getting you to install a remote access tool.
These tools are commonly used for legitimate IT support and remote work. But in the hands of a scammer, they’re used to steal your personal and financial information. It allows them to take full control of your computer from anywhere in the world.
After gaining access, scammers can:
- Steal personal information and saved passwords
- Access bank accounts and financial data
- Get into your email and social media accounts
- Install malware, spyware, or keyloggers
- Monitor your activity or access your webcam
- Lock you out of your own computer
If the remote connection tool is not completely removed, scammers can stay hidden on your device and reconnect at any time even after the initial scam ends.
How do scammers connect to the computer?
Scammers use fear and urgency to get you to act fast. They might claim your computer has been infected with a virus or that an account has been compromised. To “solve” the issue, scammers explain the need to “connect to their secure server.” They’ll direct you to a website and ask you to download and install a remote access tool like AnyDesk, UltraViewer, or Screen Connect.
Once the program is installed, it generates a unique code or PIN that the scammer will ask you to share with them. That code is the key to your computer. When you share it, you’re giving them the ability to get on your device as if they were sitting right in front of it — seeing your screen, moving your mouse, opening your files.
Once They’re In – They Stay In
Scammers can turn on “unattended access” to make sure they can come back whenever they want, even without your knowledge. Just turning off your computer won’t kick them out.
Seraph Secure will detect, block and remove these connections instantly keeping you safe from remote access scams.
