Digital Logic Gates Lab Guide

This document describes a lab experiment involving digital logic gates. Students will connect NAND gates and test their operation using truth tables. Additional circuits will be built using the NAND gates to demonstrate OR and NOR logic functions. LEDs and switches will be used to build a simple digital circuit. Students are asked to consider applications of logic circuits and draw additional logic gate examples.

EET: Introductory Electronics Spring 2012 Lab 10 Digital Devices Description: Digital logic gates are the fundamental

components of every digital system. Basic gates include the OR and the AND. Negation of these gates result in the NOR and the NAND. Equipment: 7400 Quad NAND gate DC power supply Current limiting resistor(must calculate) Light emitting diode (LED) Bread board Procedure: Part One 1. Connect the logic gate chip per the following diagram.

2. Write a truth table for the NAND gate. 3. Test the operation of one of the NAND gates in your circuit by connecting combinations of +5 volts and ground to appropriate input pins, relative to the truth table. 4. Measure the output of the NAND gate with the DVM. 5. Repeat for each NAND gate within the integrated circuit(IC).

Part Two 1. Remove power and connect the logic gate chip per the following logic diagram.

2. Test the operation by connecting combinations of +5 volts and ground to appropriate input pins. 3. Measure the output of the circuit with the DVM. 4. Determine what type of logic gate this circuit represents. Part Three 1. Remove power and connect the logic gate IC per the following logic diagram.

2. Test the operation by connecting combinations of +5 volts and ground to appropriate input pins. 3. Measure the output of the circuit with the DVM. 4. Determine what type of logic gate this circuit represents.

Part Four 1. Install switches between +5V and ground, and both input of one gate of the logic chip. Use pull-down resistors.

2. Install an LED near the output of the gate. 3. Calculate the resistor value needed to limit the current supplied to the LED, and install in series with the gate output and the LED. Typical LED current should be limited to 40-60mA. 4. Test the operation by switching combinations of +5 volts and ground to the appropriate input pins. Conclusions: 1. Describe an example of how a simple logic circuit, applied properly, could benefit you at home. Draw the circuit. 2. Create a truth table for an 8 input NOR gate. 3. Explain why a NOT gate cannot have 8 inputs. 4. Draw a circuit which illustrates how you would design a circuit which performed AND and OR functions, using only diodes.
