Measurement Lesson Plan for Year 4

This lesson plan is for a Year 4 mathematics class on measurement and capacity. The 50-minute lesson aims to teach students how to measure various classroom objects in centimeters and millimeters. Students will first estimate the measurements of objects, then use rulers to accurately measure in cm and mm. They will also practice converting between the units. The teacher will introduce the lesson with a real-world example of pool size. Students will then learn the difference between cm and m before measuring objects in pairs. At the end, students will share their results and reflect on whether they achieved the lesson's success criteria of accurate measurement.

LESSON PLAN FORMAT

The following is a sample of the lesson plan format used by the University.
Lesson Topic/Focus:

Measurement and Capacity

Date:

24/11/2014

AusVELS Domain(s):

Mathematics

Year level(s):

AusVELS strand (s):

Measurement and Geometry

Lesson duration:

50mins

AusVELS sub-strand(s):

Using Units of Measurement

Learning Intention: We are learning to measure various objects in centimetres and

millimetres.
Success Criteria: We are successful if we can measure 10 various objects in the
classroom/school. We are also successful if we can convert them from centimetres to
millimetres.
Learning Standard(s)/Outcome(s)/Objective(s):
Students should learn how to measure classroom and school objects in cm and m.

At the conclusion of this lesson, the students will know/understand that:

Students will understand that we can use instruments to measure in cm and m.
At the conclusion of this lesson, the students will demonstrate the skills/strategies of:
Students will demonstrate the ability to measure in cm and m.
Assessment:
Observation and correction of written work (Formative assessment).

Assessment criteria for analysis:

Proper understanding and use of measuring tools.

Teaching focus:
Keep students focused on the task.
Background to the learning:
A.
References for teacher background knowledge
Researched lessons and cross referenced with AusVELS.
B.
Identify students current knowledge
2 previous lessons on capacity taught by myself. Students learnt the difference between mls and litres and how to
convert the two. Fist measurement lesson this year.
Lesson resources:
Student workbooks
Rulers (must contain both cm and mm)

Lesson content:
A.
Introduction

5-10 mins

To tune students into the maths lesson have students write in their maths books how many litres they think their swimming
pool where they have school lessons is. Have them bring their books to the floor and tell them the pool is 330,000 cubic litres.
Explain that one cubic meter also equals 1000 liters.

B.
Development
15-20 mins
Then ask students what this the difference is between cm and m. 1 Meter = 100 Centimeters. Ask students why they
think we might calculate some things in m and others in cm. have students give examples. Ask for tools that we can measure
cm and m in.

C.

Consolidation, practice, extension

10-15 mins

Split students into pairs. Have students write in their books an estimation of a school object then they must measure it. E.g
tables, pencil, glue stick, scissors.

D.

Closure

10 mins

Have students come back to the floor and share things they measured. Did they all get the same results? Why/why not? Did
we meet the success criteria this lesson? Why / why not? If not how could we change the lesson to meet the criteria?

Lesson/activity transition:
Students can eat lunch before going to swimming.
