Timeline of Computing Innovations

Charles Babbage conceived of the first steam-driven calculating machine in 1822. Herman Hollerith designed the first punch card system to calculate the 1880 census in 1890. In 1937, J.V. Atanasoff attempted to build the first computer without gears, cams, belts or shafts. John Mauchly and J. Presper Eckert built the Electronic Numerical Integrator and Calculator at the University of Pennsylvania between 1943-1944, marking an important early computer. Grace Hopper developed the first computer language, COBOL, in 1953.
