Function Point Estimation Insights

This document discusses using function points to estimate software projects. It introduces function point analysis as an alternative to traditional lines of code estimation. Estimates are important at various stages including strategic planning, feasibility studies, project planning, and system specification to determine size, effort, schedule, and costs. Function point analysis has proven accurate for sizing systems and producing estimates close to actual targets.

ABSTRACT
 The purpose of this is to provide an in-depth look at
estimating software or project using the Function Point
Models as opposed to a more traditional Source Lines of
Code based model.
 Estimation is very important for determining the size of
the software.
 Without estimations, there are many problems and
difficulties that can be faced by software engineers or
managers.
 A successful project is that delivered on time and within
the budget and of required quality.
INTRODUCTION
 Estimating the software is by no means a trivial task and
in most cases the larger the software project, the more
cumbersome the estimation process.
 Estimates must be carried out at various stages. At each
stage, the reasons for the estimate and methods used will
vary accordingly.
 Estimates must be adequate and appropriate as they
proceeds to the various stages.
 The estimates decides the boundaries of the project in
terms of the resources available.
WHERE ARE ESTIMATES DONE ?
Estimates are done at-:
 Strategic Planning
 Feasibility Study
 System specification
 Project Planning

TYPES OF SOFTWARE ESTIMATION

 Size Estimates
 Effort Estimates

 Schedule Estimates

 Cost Estimates
CONCLUSION
 Function Point analysis has proven to be n accurate
technique for sizing, documenting and communicating a
system’s capability.
 FPA has been successful in correct (or near the target)
estimations of the software to be developed.
 As the computing environments become complex, it is
proving to be a valuable tool that accurately reflects the
system that is delivered and maintained by the user.
