Class 12 Computer

Big Data encompasses vast and complex data sets that require advanced processing and analysis techniques to derive valuable insights for businesses. It is characterized by the 5 V's: Volume, Velocity, Variety, Veracity, and Value, and plays a crucial role in decision-making, business growth, healthcare, and security. However, challenges such as data privacy, storage, quality, processing speed, and the need for skilled professionals persist, while the future of Big Data is expected to drive advancements in AI, smart cities, and personalized healthcare.

Big Data

• Big Data refers to complex and large data sets that have to be processed and analyzed to uncover valuable information that
can benefit businesses and organizations. It has features like:
• 1. It refers to a massive amount of data that keeps on growing exponentially with time.
• 2. It is so voluminous that it cannot be processed or analyzed using conventional data processing techniques.
• 3. It includes data mining, data storage, data analysis, data sharing, and data visualization.
• 4. The term is an all-comprehensive one including data, data frameworks, along the tools and techniques used to process
and analyze the data.
BIG DATA STATISTICS
• THE WORLD GENERATES OVER 2.5
QUINTILLION BYTES OF DATA EVERY
DAY.
• BY 2025, 175 ZETTABYTES OF DATA
ARE EXPECTED WORLDWIDE.
• EVERY MINUTE : 500,000 TWEETS ON
TWITTER AND 500 HOURS OF
VIDEOS UPLOADED TO YOUTUBE.
• 90% OF THE WORLD’S DATA WAS
CREATED IN THE LAST 2 YEARS
ALONE.
Structured
• STRUCTURED BIG DATA IS DATA THAT IS
ORGANIZED IN A FIXED FORMAT, LIKE
ROWS AND COLUMNS IN A TABLE. IT CAN
BE EASILY STORED, ACCESSED, AND
ANALYZED USING TRADITIONAL
DATABASES.
• EXAMPLES
• BANK TRANSACTIONS (AMOUNT, DATE,
ACCOUNT NUMBER)
• EMPLOYEE RECORDS (NAME, ID,
SALARY)
• ONLINE SHOPPING DATA (PRODUCT ID,
PRICE, QUANTITY)
UNSTRUCTURED DATA

Unstructured data refers to information

that does not have a predefined format
or schema. Unlike structured data
(organized neatly in rows and columns),
unstructured data is often messy, varied,
and harder to store or analyze using
traditional databases. It can be textual,
visual, or audio, and usually requires
advanced tools like AI, machine
learning, or natural language
processing (NLP) to extract meaning.
Example
• Text documents: Emails, reports,
articles, meeting transcripts.
• Multimedia files: Images, audio
recordings, video footage.
• Social media content: Tweets,
Facebook posts, YouTube comments.
Characteristics
of Big Data
• To understand Big Data
better ,Big Data can be
describe using five important
characteristics called the 5
V's.

Volume
• Volume refers to the huge
amount of data generated every
second. Size of data plays a very
crucial role in determining value
out of data

• Example: Facebook generates

over 4 petabytes of data per day
from posts, images, and videos.
Velocity

Velocity refer to the speed at which data

is created, collected, and processed.

Example
Stock market trading systems process
millions of transactions per second in real
time.
Variety

• The different types of data

formats (structured, semi-
structured, unstructured).

• Example

• An e-commerce site collects

structured data (sales records),
semi-structured data (JSON logs),
and unstructured data (customer
reviews, product images).
Veracity

• Refers to the accuracy, reliability,

and trustworthiness of data.

• Example

• Social media posts may contain

fake news or misleading
information, so companies must
filter and validate before analysis.
Value

• The usefulness of data in

driving decisions and
insights.

• Example

• Netflix analyze viewing

patterns to recommend
shows, turning raw data
into business value by
improving customer
satisfaction.
IMPORTANCE OF BIG
DATA
• BETTER DECISION MAKING – BIG DATA
HELPS ORGANIZATIONS ANALYZE
INFORMATION AND MAKE SMART
DECISIONS.
• IMPROVES BUSINESS GROWTH –
COMPANIES USE DATA TO UNDERSTAND
CUSTOMERS AND INCREASE SALES.
• USED IN HEALTHCARE – HELPS DOCTORS
PREDICT DISEASES AND IMPROVE
TREATMENTS
• ENHANCES SECURITY – BIG DATA IS USED
TO DETECT FRAUD AND CYBER THREATS.
CHALLENGES OF BIG
DATA
• DATA PRIVACY ISSUES – LARGE AMOUNTS OF
DATA CAN BE MISUSED IF NOT PROTECTED.
• STORAGE PROBLEMS – BIG DATA REQUIRES
HUGE STORAGE SPACE AND ADVANCED
SYSTEMS.
• DATA QUALITY – DATA MAY BE INCOMPLETE,
INACCURATE, OR UNORGANIZED.
• PROCESSING SPEED – ANALYZING BIG DATA
TAKES TIME AND POWERFUL COMPUTERS.
• SKILLED PROFESSIONALS NEEDED – EXPERTS
ARE REQUIRED TO HANDLE AND ANALYZE
BIG DATA.
FUTURE OF BIG DATA

• GROWTH OF AI AND MACHINE LEARNING

– BIG DATA WILL HELP AI BECOME
SMARTER AND MORE USEFUL.
• SMART CITIES DEVELOPMENT – DATA
WILL IMPROVE TRAFFIC, SECURITY, AND
PUBLIC SERVICES.
• BETTER HEALTHCARE – BIG DATA WILL
HELP IN DISEASE PREDICTION AND
PERSONALIZED TREATMENT.
• BUSINESS DECISION MAKING –
COMPANIES WILL USE DATA TO
UNDERSTAND CUSTOMERS AND GROW.
• MORE DATA-DRIVEN JOBS – DEMAND FOR
DATA ANALYSTS AND DATA SCIENTISTS
WILL INCREASE.
