INTRODUCTION

The superposition theorem states that a circuit with multiple power sources can be
analyzed by evaluating only one power source at a time. Then, the component voltages
and currents are added algebraically to determine the circuit response with all power
sources in effect. principle of superposition, in wave motion, the principle that when two
or more waves overlap in space, the resulting disturbance is equal to the algebraic sum of
the individual disturbances.

The superposition theorem is a circuit analysis theorem used to solve the network
where two or more sources are present and connected.
Superposition theorem states the following:
“In any linear and bilateral network or circuit having multiple independent sources, the
response of an element will be equal to the algebraic sum of the responses of that
element by considering one source at a time.”
To calculate the individual contribution of each source in a circuit, the other source
must be replaced or removed without affecting the final result. This is done by
replacing the voltage source with a short circuit. While removing a voltage source, its
value is set to zero. When removing a current source, its value is set to infinite. This is
done by replacing the current source with an open circuit.
The superposition theorem is very important in circuit analysis because it converts a
complex circuit into a Norton or Thevenin equivalent circuit.

SUPERPOSITION THEOREM

 WHAT IS SUPERPOSITION THEOREM ?

 The superposition theorem states that a circuit with multiple power

sources can be analyzed by evaluating only one power source at a time.
Then, the component voltages and currents are added algebraically to
determine the circuit response with all power sources in effect. principle
of superposition, in wave motion, the principle that when two or more
waves overlap in space, the resulting disturbance is equal to the algebraic
sum of the individual disturbances.

where two or more sources are present and connected.

6
DEFINATION

 Definition: The current through, or voltage across, an element in a linear bilatera l

network equal to the algebraic sum of the currents or voltages produced independently
by each source.
The Superposition theorem is very helpful in determining the voltage across an element
or current through a branch when the circuit contains multiple
number of voltage or current sources.

7
PROCEDURE FOR APPLYING
SUPERPOSITION THEOREM

 Procedure for applying Superposition Theorem

‣ Circuits Containing Only Independent

Sources Consider only one source to be active
at a time.
Remove all other IDEAL VOLTAGE SOURCES by SHORT CIRCUIT & all other IDEAL
CURRENT SOURCES by OPEN CIRCUIT.

To simplify a circuit using the superposition theorem, the following steps to be

followed: identify all current and voltage sources in the circuit; create multiple
versions of the circuit and the other sources must be removed using the following
rule: voltage sources must be replaced with a short circuit and current

APPLICATIONS

 Applications : -

1. The application of the superposition theorem is, we can employ only linear circuits as

well as the circuit which has more supplies.

2. From the above superposition theorem examples, this theorem cannot be used for non-

linear circuits, but applicable for linear circuits. The circuit can be examined with a

single power source at a time, the

10
ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES

 Advantages:

1) This theorem provide basis for the analysis of circuit.

2) Superposition theorem used for application of network sources element.
3) Any circuit can be converted into thevenin equivalent using this theorem.

 Disadvantages:

1) As this theorem is based on the linearity so it is not possible to calculate the power
using this theorem.
2) in case of un-balanced bridge circuit this theorem can't be use
3) The one big limitation is that this theorem only applied to the circuits with more than one
source.

11
Conclusion : -

When adding up each source’s individual contributions, be careful when assigning signs to
the quantities. Each unknown quantity should be assigned a reference direction. A positive
sign in the total indicates that a contribution from a source is in the same direction as the
reference direction; a negative sign indicates that it is in the opposite direction.
All of the components of a circuit must be linear to employ the superposition theorem with
currents and voltages.
It’s worth noting that the superposition theorem doesn’t apply to power because it isn’t a
linear quantity.

It asserts that when numerous independent sources act at the same time in a linear circuit,
the response in that branch is equal to the total of the responses owing to each
independent source acting at a time. Only one independent source will be considered at a
time in this procedure.
