Hello everyone
Hopefully people were able to take advantage of the Albany Agriculture Show Day holiday and
enjoy the many wonderful events and exhibitions on display. All the students from Room 16
Year 1 entered the cooking competition and, within their age division, they did extremely well
with a number of achieving second and third place. Congratulations to all and thanks to Ms
Lace for organising and providing this great learning opportunity for the students in her class.
Whilst on the show, thank you Mr Beatty and Ms Jones for coordinating and preparing the
Lockyer Leapers to do two presentations, one Friday and another Saturday of the Show
weekend. By all accounts they were sensational. Thanks also to Ruben and Julie De Graaf
who manned the Our Place stall over both show days.
We have included in this newsletter some photos of the Leapers, Room 16s baking and PP2s
Puppets. For further photos of the many different things that have been happening in and out
of the school please go to our Facebook page, you will be amazed.
Last Friday I had the pleasure of attending a performance by our School Choir at the opening of
the Salvation Army Wishing Tree in Kmart. The Choir performed three Christmas Carols to a
very appreciative audience. The Choir were given just two days notice, and I have to say that
given the time they had to prepare, Ms Jones performed miracles. They were sensational.
Road Safety
It was brought to my attention last week by a very shaken parent that he had nearly run over a
student as they exited the school and crossed Admiral Street to go down Parker Street. The
person was driving a 4 wheel drive and the young boy crossed the road on his bike, without a
helmet and without looking. The driver was able to brake and avoid hitting the student however
his younger sister followed and narrowly escaped being hit as he could not see her. I ask all
parents to be vigilant in ensuring your child has the appropriate protective wear and understand
basic road rules such as crossing roads.
Hats
The Uniform Shop has recently had a consignment of hats delivered. They are reversible
bucket hats faction colour and school colour. In terms 1 and 4 children must have a hat when
outside- no hat no play. The hat is a part of the school uniform and we advise parents to
purchase hats from the uniform shop. We strongly encourage and reward students who wear
the school hats. Many students purchased hats with specific slogans at the show, these are
great for home but not for school.
This week the assembly will be hosted by the children in Room 23.

MANAGING STUDENT BEHAVIOUR

WHAT IS BULLYING?

The key to this approach is that the child is given a choice at each step to
follow directions or face increased consequences.
Students making GOOD CHOICES are acknowledged for their efforts.
For students making POOR CHOICES the following consequences
apply ~

Bullying is when a student or group

keep picking on another student. They

emotionally.
The
behaviour
is
deliberate and repeated.

STEP 1

Class.
STEP 4

Parents will be requested to attend
school.

SUSPENSION
Students will be immediately
suspended for verbal abuse of
staff and/or violence towards
staff or students.

suspension must be
accompanied by an adult and
will attend the Intervention
Centre (Room 20) where an
Individual Behaviour
Management Plan will be

'Lockyer Dollars' is an incentive system at Mount Lockyer Primary School that motivates students by rewarding positive behavior and achievements. This system encourages students to engage in school activities, knowing their efforts will be recognized and rewarded with a form of currency that can be redeemed for items or privileges. The term-by-term expiration policy also promotes active participation throughout the year, preventing complacency and ensuring sustained engagement .

Mount Lockyer Primary School's mobile phone policy requires devices to be switched off during school time and handed to teachers or the office. Phones are prohibited on school grounds except with Principal's permission. Advantages include minimizing distractions and potential cyberbullying during school hours, while disadvantages might include hindering communication for emergencies. Additionally, the school accepts no responsibility for mobile phones, which could cause parental concern regarding lost or damaged devices .

Mount Lockyer Primary School’s measures to prevent and address bullying include defining bullying clearly, encouraging students to report incidents, and ensuring both victims and perpetrators receive counseling. The school fosters a culture where asking for help is encouraged, thus reducing the stigma. In cases of bullying, steps include warnings, isolations, and possible suspension. This structured and supportive approach is likely to be effective as it fosters a safe environment and educates students on the implications of bullying .

Mount Lockyer Primary School emphasizes road safety education by encouraging parents to ensure their children wear appropriate protective clothing and understand basic road rules. This initiative was underscored by an incident where a student was almost hit by a 4-wheel drive while crossing Admiral Street on a bike without a helmet and without looking, highlighting the necessity of road safety awareness .

Extracurricular sports programs like 'Vegemite SurfGroms' enhance the educational experience at Mount Lockyer Primary School by developing students' physical health, confidence, and teamwork skills. These programs provide structured activities that complement academic learning with practical skills and values such as discipline and perseverance. By engaging in sports, students learn to balance both physical and academic pursuits, contributing to a well-rounded education .

Mount Lockyer Primary School manages student behavior through a stepwise approach where students are given choices to follow directions or face consequences. The process starts with a verbal warning (Step 1). If non-compliance continues, it leads to in-class consequences like Time Out (Step 2), followed by out-of-class consequences such as a Buddy Class (Step 3). Further refusal results in a RED CARD sent to the office and potentially involves parental intervention (Step 4).

The Positive Parenting Program aligns with Mount Lockyer Primary School's educational objectives by offering seminars that support the school's emphasis on developing responsible and engaged students. The program encourages parents to reinforce values such as self-discipline, problem-solving, and social skills, which complement the school's values of care and excellence. This alignment helps create a consistent and supportive environment for both academic and personal development .

Mount Lockyer Primary School's Lost Property policy contributes to community values by fostering responsibility and sustainability. The P+C checks for names to return items, while unclaimed clothes are laundered and sold as second-hand uniforms. This encourages students to take responsibility for their belongings while promoting resourcefulness and community involvement through recycling uniforms .

Mount Lockyer Primary School integrates extracurricular activities such as the School Choir's performance, Lockyer Leapers presentations, and community playgroups into its educational framework. These activities provide students with opportunities for personal growth, team collaboration, and community engagement, thereby enhancing their social skills and confidence beyond academics. Such involvement also reinforces school values like care, compassion, and excellence .

Mount Lockyer Primary School promotes the value of 'Enthusiasm' by encouraging students to demonstrate this virtue actively. Students showing enthusiasm are eligible to be entered into a draw for a prize at the assembly. This value is supported by a memory jogger, ‘I look on the bright side,’ encouraging a positive mindset . This initiative helps integrate values education into the school's culture, making it a daily pursuit for students .
