AC to DC Conversion via Rectifiers

A rectifier converts alternating current (AC) to direct current (DC) by allowing current to pass through the device in only one direction. There are different types of rectifiers including vacuum tube diodes, semiconductor diodes, and silicon-controlled rectifiers. Rectifiers take the form of half-wave rectifiers, which only pass one half of the AC waveform, or full-wave rectifiers, which pass both halves of the AC waveform in alternating directions to produce DC. Rectifiers are used in nearly all power supplies to convert AC household current to the DC required by electronic devices.

Rectifier

A rectifier is an electrical device

that converts alternating
current (AC), which periodically
reverses direction, to direct
current (DC), which flows in only
one direction. The process is
known as rectification.
Physically, rectifiers take a
number of forms,
including vacuum
tube diodes, mercury-arc valves,
copper and selenium oxide
rectifiers,semiconductor
diodes, silicon-controlled

rectifiers and other silicon-based

semiconductor switches.
Historically, even synchronous
electromechanical switches and
motors have been used.

reveals that the junction diode

TYPE OF RECTIFIER
Mainly we have two types of
rectifier:

Applications[edit]

The primary application of

rectifiers is to derive DC power
from an AC supply (AC to DC
converter). Virtually all electronic
devices require DC, so rectifiers
are used inside the power
supplies of virtually all electronic
equipment.
rectifiers are used In most of the
electronic devices like TVs,

Radios, Chargers, L i g h t i n g s
etc.
