Industrial engineering is a branch of engineering which deals with the optimization of
complex processes or systems. It is concerned with the development, improvement, and
implementation of integrated systems of people, money, knowledge, information, equipment,
energy, materials, analysis and synthesis, as well as the mathematical, physical and social
sciences together with the principles and methods of engineering design to specify, predict,
and evaluate the results to be obtained from such systems or processes.
Quality assurance (QA) is a way of preventing mistakes or defects in manufactured products
and avoiding problems when delivering solutions or services to customers; which ISO
9000 defines as "part of quality management focused on providing confidence that quality
requirements will be fulfilled". This defect prevention in quality assurance differs subtly from
defect detection and rejection in quality control, and has been referred to as a shift left as it
focuses on quality earlier in the process.
QA is applied to physical products in pre-production to verify what will be made meets
specifications and requirements, and during manufacturing production runs by validating lot
samples meet specified quality controls. QA is also applied to software to verify that features
and functionality meet business objectives, and that code is relatively bug free prior to
shipping or releasing new software products and versions.

2. BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE TRAINING HOST ORGANIZATION

2.1 Historical Overview of the Organization

National Paints was first established in the year 1969, and today ranks 32nd amongst the
world's 100 largest producers of paint and coatings according to its sales in 2011, the 18th
amongst the 25 largest producers of paint in Europe. It is the largest paint producer in the
Middle East and ranks number one, with total production capacity exceeding 400 million
liters of paint per year. With such a production record National Paints is considered a leading
provider of high quality paint products.
National Paints currently owns 18 factories spread across the world, launching first in Jordan
and then onto the United Arab Emirates (UAE). National Paints Factory in Sharjah UAE is
considered the largest production complex for paint products and related material in the
Middle East and the Arab World. Thereon National Paints spread its operations to Qatar,
Palestine, Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, Oman, Romania, India, and Egypt.
Its products are exported to over 60 countries worldwide. In addition, has also a showrooms
spread across Russia, Syria, and Lebanon
2.2 Organizations Products and Services

Water based and lead free solvent based decorative paints resistant to mold and other
environmental changes that may affect different surfaces.
Decorative paints for external use.
Paints to create artistic and rustic effects.
Industrial and metallic paints.
Furniture and wood finish paints.
Automotive paints (several systems).

Environmentally friendly powder coatings specially for galvanized and non galvanized

Through two of the biggest research and development labs and technical collaboration with
international entities such as Trans Ocean from Holland, Italtinto from Italy, National
Paints product line is constantly updated in accordance with the demands of each separate
market involved.
National Paints expanding product range and its strive for quality have granted it several
international awards of recognition. Its reputation has given full support to undergo paint
projects for hotels, airports, government corporations, hospitals, cultural institutions and other
private and public sectors in various countries.

The research and development department participates in increasing profits by providing

To get well acquainted and study competitors products in various markets so as to find the
most suitable method in production to sustain high quality.
To use alternative raw materials so as to achieve the best production, decrease process cost
or shorten production time with keeping quality to its standard.
Find quick solutions in sudden production problems as to improve better quality.
Invent new products as per requests of special clients.
Solving society problems, environmental, energy and general health by developing new
products in order to secure users health and/or decrease energy costs by electrical solutions or
ensure longer life time for painted surfaces.

-Automotive Paints.
Automotive paint is designed to be applied on all types of vehicles. The company produces
several types of automotive paint products varying in their properties. They are great resistant
to harsh weather conditions such as heat, humidity and UV rays. They also preserve the
vehicle original color, quality and shine also, resist chemicals such as kerosene and fuel. In
addition to protect from other factors such as roads, scratches, dents, bumps and others.
Types of Automotive Paint:
- The Nitrocellulose Paint.
- Synthetic Paint:

- Acrylic Paints System.
This type of paint can be divided into two groups:
NCR Paints
With the top coat layer (2K) and the base coat (1K)
NUMIX Paint:
A large data base of standardized color formulations covering most of the codes numbers
used by the automobile industry, OEM System consists of Autocryl (2K) and Autobase (1K).
-Furniture and Wood Paints
Wooden products vary in type, look and color so as to meet the demands of consumers. The
properties of related paint products also vary in nature so as to comply with different tastes
and preferences.
-Nitrocellulose Paint: This product is known for a fast drying rate, and is easy to preserve and
maintain.
-Acid Curing Paint: This paint product is known for a fast drying rate and is highly resistance
to chemicals, scratches and other environmental factors.
-Acrylic Polyurethane Paint: This most recent furniture paint is of high quality and is resistant
to UV rays, dampness and other environmental hazards, resistant to yellowness.

-Special Usage Paints

Produces paint products that are specifically designed for special purposes. These paint

-Miscellaneous
Spray plaster, Thinners, Paint Remover and Stains.
-Powder Coatings.
Considered as the newest innovation in the paint systems industry, they are linking and
coloring material. They are solid, and do not contain solvent material. These products are
known as long-lasting, and are echo friendly.
Powder Coating products include:
Polyester Based Powder: Designed for outdoor use, the long lasting powder is capable of
high sticking capacities, and is easy to apply. Additionally the powder is characterized as a
high resistant to different weather conditions.
Epoxy Based Powder: This product is highly resistant to chemical reactions such as
applied to metal furniture and also high resistant to rust.
Hybrid Powder Coatings: Designed for indoor use, such as metallic furniture paint.

2.3 Management Structure

Management structure in national paints factories starts from the top position in the company
which is the president (the owner), then it branches off to several site managers , below
which comes the workers who is responsible in working to get ready of paints
2.4 Description of the Functions of Key Units

2.4.1

Procurement Department

The main role of this department is to make all the required procedures and processes
related to all the purchases for every single company and factory related to Al-Sayegh
Group, and this implies that there are no procurement departments other the one located
in the National Paints Company.
All the purchasing processes are accomplished through the use of the ORION system
which represents one of the ERP systems; The ORION system gathers all the related
companies in one system.
Purchases in AL- Sayegh Group are divided into two main categories :

2.4.2

Sales Department

The main function of the sales department is to monitor the procedures of delivering and
selling and many other issues related to satisfying customers needs, also it deals with
customer care and solving any problems that may occur while dealing with the customer and
to accomplish this the department has three other sectors related to it : Customer care center,
technical support and the collection department.

The Sales department in the National Paints Company is divided into two main categories:

The Internal Sales Department is mainly considered to fulfill the customers needs inside the
Kingdom (Internally) also it is responsible for delivering and shipping the goods to the
customer.
This sector is divided into 4 other sectors :
[Link] dealers sales: this sector joins sex representatives who are responsible of all the deals in
all the parts of the kingdom
2. the cars paint sector: where there are two types of cars paint manually made and

2.4.3

Planning and production control

In general planning department one of the most important departments in any institution which is
responsible for the implementation of the planning production processes in the factory.
Functions of planning and production control department divided into several sections, which are as
follows:
1. Preparation and processing of weekly production plans, which include the agenda of every
production section for a week, in which every weekly plan represents a weekly total of daily
production plans.
production plans prepared at the beginning of each week to schedule and organize production
required in type and quantity for each production section, regarding to production capacity and
available resources for each section also working to make the optimal utilization is considered (over
all effective equipment), and taking into consideration the possibility of entering a non-scheduled
orders into the production plan in case there any special order available.
The preparation of the weekly plan based on checking the document of the minimum amount for each
finished goods for domestic market sales, and here is should be mentioned that production pattern to
that have been considered to meet the requirement for domestic market is (Make to stock) without the
needing to check domestic market orders, and the document of the minimum amount for each finished
goods for domestic market sales revealed the available amount for each finished good and the
minimum limit of it so that:
- Minimum limit: represents sales of finished goods at domestic market for the last two weeks of the
date that the document revealed at.
- Balance: The available quantity of the material at local finished goods warehouses.
- As this helps Planning Department to identify and detect products that must be produce by printing
work orders for each.
But in case of export sales, the document of pending sales order must be check, to identify and detect
products that must be produce by printing work orders for each to meet the requirement of export
market.

2.4.4

Quality Assurance

It is the department responsible about planning and organizing procedures in the National
Paints Factory to maintain the high quality and its continuity, and that includes applying and
documenting of the quality management system steps Since that system is followed in the
company and has to be applied perfectly and if needed to improve it
Also the department is considered to checking the product brings the required customer
satisfaction and is within the required quality specifications

It also maintains and applies the obligations and specifications of each product to get the
required quality for each of the companys products, documenting the quality data as well.
It also makes an evaluation of the current state periodically.
2.4.5 Warehouses department
Warehouses are divided into more than one type and that according to the products and
materials they contain, so the warehouses in the National Paints are divided into:
1. Raw materials warehouses(PR):
Raw materials warehouse store all of materials that are necessary for preparation and
production operations of finished goods are in it, as it coordinate with the Planning
Department to determine the quality and quantity of materials required by each production
process per day and around the clock.
2. Finished goods warehouses at production departments (PD):
It's a small sectional production warehouses located in some production sections such as
production filling sections and emulation section that store finished goods that came out from
production sections temporarily and for a short time and that after completion of preparation
and production of these finished goods.
After that finished goods transferred to finished good warehouses (local or export).
3. Finished goods warehouses-local(PFLA):
Store finished goods that demanded for local market, so that after the completion of
production operations for these finished goods and store it temporarily at PD warehouse,
finished goods transferred to PFLA warehouse to sell it at local market.

Profile of Employees

Almost all of the employees at the company are well qualified, each for his job. Those who
have little knowledge and experience about a certain issue (especially technicians) are due to
free training courses and workshops in order to improve their experience and to reduce the
time needed for the process completion
3. MAJOR WORK ASSIGNMENTS

The first three weeks assignment, I had to work on updating the checklist in order to make
auditing more efficiency
The third week of the same month I had to follow up the problems that happened previously
and make sure to never happen again
The first two weeks of the second month I had to follow up the controlling equipment to
make sure everything is alright before getting ISO9001
The last two weeks of the second month I had to create SOP for the employee to help them
how to open new codes in ORION system

Getting involved in all operations as possible, Carrying out all the responsibilities entrusted to
me and making sure to finish all tasks in a shorter time

4. CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDATION

As a QA engineer I had the experience to deal with site workers and technicians, I dealt with
different varieties of people starting with good mannered engineers ending up with badmannered technicians. I had the ability to work in a hard-working environment, which needs
endurance of working under pressure. Actually it was a good work to start up with; being
responsible enriches our selfconfidence and improves our personal skills. I do recommend
such training opportunities for other students to be enrolled in, in order to end up with a good
experience that would lead to better opportunities in the future.
