Domain/Curricular Structure:
Mathematics: Number Sense and Base Ten, Algebraic Thinking and Operations
Goal/Concepts to be explored:
The student will solve missing addend word/story problems through hands-on manipulation of
problems, whole group discussion, and individual work.
Objectives/Indicators:
[Link].1 Solve real-world/story problems using addition (as a joining action and as a
part-part-whole action) and subtraction (as a separation action, finding parts of the whole, and as
comparison) through 20 unknowns in all positions.
[Link].5 - The student will recognize how counting relates to addition and subtraction.
[Link].6 - The student will demonstrate a. addition and subtraction through 20; b. fluency with
addition and related subtraction facts through 10.
Content/Rationale:
Students are ready for this material as they have successfully completed the modules leading up
to this lesson. Students have a good grasp of number sentences and number bonds and
understand the strategies necessary to find a missing addend in a number sentence. (such as
counting on or using a number line). The material will also be differentiated in a way that allows
students who understand the material really well to be challenged as well as challenging students
who may not have as strong of a grasp of the information.
Professional Resources:
B.U.I.L.D Format

Materials:
iPads
Smartboard
Whiteboards
Expo markers
Erasers
Worksheet (Seen in assessments)
Unifix Cubes
Procedures:
Students will gather on the carpet with their whiteboards, erasers, and expo markers for a
SmartBoard lesson after a brain break.
Teacher will introduce the word problems shown on the smartboard.
Students will solve the problems individually on their whiteboard while one student
solves it on the smartboard.
Students will check their work as the teacher corrects or explains the answer on the
board.
Repeat for each slide on the smartboard.
After the SmartBoard lesson is finished the teacher will introduce and remind the
students of the BUILD activities for the day.
Students will be broken up into their BUILD sections and told to return their
whiteboards, markers, and erasers to their desk.
Students will be dismissed from the carpet by BUILD section.
All supplies will be set out in each BUILD basket.
Students will have 15-20 minutes to work on the BUILD materials before switching
BUILD activities.
Teacher will work with the I group as a blend of Independent practice and D doing
math with the teacher.
After 20 minutes the teacher will have students clean up their BUILD materials and bring
them back to the math area.
Students will be called to sit on the mat after cleaning up their BUILD materials by their
BUILD section.
Once all students have returned their items, the teacher will switch the BUILD groups to
use other materials and send the groups out by section as before.
After another 15-20 minutes the students will clean up their areas and be called to return
their BUILD materials by section and return to the carpet.
Once all students are at the carpet the teacher will use a brain break to transition into
ELA.
B-Buddy Games: Chop -Use a ten stick of Unifix cubes with a partner and chop the unifix ten
stick in half. Show the partner one side of the stick and have the partner answer how many you
have hidden behind your back. (Totaling to ten). Then write the number sentence on the
worksheet.
U-Using Technology: Students will work individually on Number Bond Blasters on the iPad
I-Independent Practice: Students will work in small groups with Ms. Tessier on the missing
addend worksheet listed below in the assessment section. This work will be done through
assistance from the teacher and some problems will be done by trying it on their own.
L- Learning About Numbers: Students work individually on number bond flip charts.
Differentiated Teaching Strategies:
Students will follow the BUILD strategy. Students will work in a variety of the BUILD sections
with I and D being combined for assisted independent work with the teacher. Students who need
more assistance working on buddy games will be placed with partners who can help or be helped
by their other partner.
Assessment:
Students will be informally assessed as they answer the SmartBoard problems on their
whiteboards during whole group instruction. Students will also be assessed as the teacher walks
around to monitor student activity in each BUILD section. Students on iPads are given score
reports for the number bond blaster game that the teacher can see as they walk by giving how
many the student has answered correctly. All sections of BUILD except U (utilize technology)
will have worksheets for informal assessment that the teacher will collect to assess for
correctness. Teacher will also walk around to observe, monitor, and assist students in their
understanding of the material.
