Classroom Layout Design Rationale

Carmen Lemen rearranged her classroom layout based on guidelines from chapters assigned for the week. She created defined areas for large group instruction, small group work, and independent student work. The small areas are separated to allow for both quiet and louder work, while still allowing the teacher to supervise the entire room. Lemen plans to rearrange furniture and learning areas frequently to match different themes and instructional needs, using a flexible approach like a flipped classroom model.

Rationale for Classroom Layout

After reading the two chapters for this weeks assignment, I became
very excited about changing the layout of my classroom. Students come to
my classroom for their resource minutes, behavior and to work distraction
free, so I know this is something I need to have done well. For so long I
have heard OPEN CONCEPT and I have always struggled with this view.
Knowing my students need more defined and distraction free areas.

I decided to really adhere to the learning environment checklist given

in Chapter 4. I made sure to include a large group area, small group area
with either the round table in the back left corner or at the kidney table in
the back. I also included independent student table. One being round and
two rectangle. The students can also have a well defined independent area
in the area with the round table (top middle). I also learned there needs to
be separate areas throughout the room. Some that are more quiet and
some that are ok for noise. I tried to separate all areas, keeping in mind
that the teacher needs to be able to see the entire room.

After reading through what is needed in each area, I have decided

that the small group round tables or other areas can be converted
according to what is needed. There will always be the literacy (library) area,
but that can change with the theme. The small group round tables can be
changed from art center, to science center, to small group work area. The
idea of a flipped classroom comes to mind when rearranging my virtual
classroom. Along with the environmental change of furniture, I would
change the types of seating if I had the funds!
