DREW’S NEWS
NOVEMBER 2010

It may be true that there are times when a particular token of appreciation is appropriate - birthdays,
anniversaries, graduations, and such are all fine times to note the importance of a friend or loved one and
we feel okay expressing some thanks at times like that.

Holidays like Thanksgiving and Christmas are landmarks that some of us use to navigate our way
through gratitudes and appreciations - if we haven’t shown thankfulness in awhile we can be reminded by
the calendar that it is due, or past due.

On my best days I awake with an appreciation for the day as the first thing on my mind - I may start
before I open my eyes as I think of a kindness, or a selfless gesture, or a thing of beauty I witnessed
recently. And I think that thinking about these things somehow makes the world a little better place. I
know it makes my day a little better.

Other days I may not notice such things. I may be focused on a task or goal that needs to be reached, or
my attention may be drawn toward my own or someone else’s problems and I may fail to be grateful for
much of anything. Those are the days that are endured through brute strength.

Thankfulness can improve the odds of passing days with elegance and joy and that’s a pretty good reason
to lean toward gratitude, without regard to the calendar. It may be easier to articulate our gratitude on
certain days, but my question is, “why wait?” We are now entering the so-called holiday season that for
some is the most festive time of year and for others is the most difficult. November features
Thanksgiving, and I suggest we consider it the beginning of a time of gratitude. If we are successful in
this task, there will be no end to this time of gratitude, and every day will have a moment, or many
moments!

I am glad you are here!

Bring Your Stories

Our first group of interviewers are ready to start listening

to every member, friend, and guest of the congregation.
We will be trying very hard to include everyone, and you
can help by taking one of these opportunities.

Reverend Drew referred to this as “watching over the

love” and it is also called “appreciative inquiry.”  These
brief conversations will guide the congregation in
clarifying and defining our future, and every voice
matters!

Our current interviewers are Rey/Marvin Baumel, Maria

Bishop, June Harbett, Michael Malone, Margaret
McAlister, Derrick Mustellier, Rex Thompson, Reed
Olszack, and Lisa Shackelford.  You can ask any one of
them to conduct your interview.

If you have a certain time you are available, you could

also call the office to find out if interviewers are available
during that time.
