Impact of Sports on Academic Performance

This document discusses a research study on the effects of school athletics on the academic performance of Grade 12 students at Silliman Senior High School. The study aims to determine if participation in athletics has positive or negative impacts on students' GPAs and ability to manage their time between sports and academics. It also seeks to understand how to help student-athletes balance their responsibilities. The significance of the study is that it could benefit students, school staff, the community, and future researchers by providing insight into the relationship between athletics and academics. The central problems driving the study are how athletics impact academic performance and how student-athletes can effectively manage their time.

CHAPTER I

Sports involvement and academic success of student-athletes had been a topic of

discussion long time ago. Past researchers observed that participation in sports may reduce the

time available for studying and learning, since students-athletes were having difficulties in

managing their time between hectic schedules of sports training and requirements of academic

subjects ( Ignacio and Buot 2017).

Our study is done to address the rising problem of student athletics in time management.

The goal an out study is to determine the effects of participation in athletics on academic

performance among senior high school students, specifically Grade 12 students. One such

problem was that the impact of athletics on academics was actually tied to a low GPA (grade

point average) that make student athletes fail due to lack of time through studying and making

projects. These concerns, inflated by highly exposed cases of athletes who left their studies or

their sports.

The purpose of the study is to attempt to link the impact of athletics on academic

performance to the grade 12 senior high school students that are having a really bad habit, in

managing their time. The other goal of our study is to know the bad and good effects of being a

student athletics. According to (Anonymous 2017)”There are also many benefits as a student

athlete”. Long and Caudil (1991)”The positive correlations are likely mediated through three

mechanisms: better academic self-concept, academic discipline and health”. Alex Hatch (2019)”

big negative affect of being in a sport in school that is unpredictable is injuries, stress and

cramming due to lack of time”. Also to spread awareness that student athletes are very busy

people. Being a student athlete can be very difficult for people especially during school time

knowing that they have to do both sports and class work (Cheung, 2002).
SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

This study was designed to understand the effects of being a student athletics on

Grade 12 Senior High School students and other members of the Silliman community

on how to know the effects on the academic performance of being a student athlete and

derive possible solutions or improvements to help student’s athletes in the gathered

data. This study will provide a perspective for other schools, communities and cities

that are struggling of being an athlete. The output of this study will benefit the

following:

Students. The students can benefit from this study because they will be able to

know another perspective from being a student-athlete. In addition, it gives them an

opportunity to balance their academics and extracurricular activities if they struggle

with time management. Lastly, upon reading this study, they would realize the benefit

of being a student-athlete as it provides them desirable qualities such as self-discipline.

School Staff. Through this study, School staffs can understand students

participation on athletics upon knowing this school staff can adjust for student athlete

so they can cope with their athletics. School Athletics can be a basis of a school pride

and can help student and School Staff relationship.

The school administration can be able to benefit from this research upon

knowing the winning rates of their student-athletes, as they can also propose ways on

improving their students’ training hours

Community. This will give them knowledge about the effects of being a student

athlete on their academic performance. Furthermore, time management is one of the

keys for them to balance practices and school works.

Future Researchers. This will benefit future researchers by using our final

research as a guide for them to connect the ideas present in this study. This study

would also help the researchers to be aware and knowledgeable of the processes

involved in the effects of athletic participation to academic performance. It

would help them to be a better analyst and it can be a help as a future reference

for more studies in the future.

Statement of the problem

The central issue that drives this study is the relationship between academic

performance and athletic participation. Fisher (1996) and Din (2005) found no significant

impact of athletics on academic performance, while Yiannakis and Melnick (2001), Broh

(2002), and Jordan (1999) were able to determine that there was a significant positive

impact on student achievement.

Specifically, it seeks to answer the following questions:

1. How much do sports practices take up or demand in a week?

2. How can student athletes manage their time in practices and academics?
3. How can being a student athlete affects one’s academic performance?

4. What are the skills needed to have a balanced time between athletics and sports?
