Rhumb Line vs Great Circle Sailing

The document appears to be a navigation planning program or spreadsheet that has been populated with sample data. It contains information about departure and arrival locations, including latitude and longitude, as well as blank fields that would presumably be automatically populated with waypoints, distances, compass bearings, and other navigation details for a planned route. However, most of the cells currently show errors or are blank, suggesting the macros and/or calculations for routing have not been properly run for this sample data.

Return to RouteData
The file requires the activation of the macros (Security Alert - message bar at the top)

In case in some cells errors appear like: # NAME? ... .. # # # # etc….... This is caused by not enabling

Sheet"RouteData" - spreadsheet calculations

Calculation method no.2: GC waypoints are automatically generated
Calculation method no.1 - set the yellow cell N7 to 1 - manual waypoints : Enter manual data (yellow cells)
in columns M,N,O (latitude) and/or columns P,Q,R (longitude)

a) - By entering latitude and/or longitude you get the rhumb lines between the waypoints

b) - If you enter only the longitudes you get the intersections on the
meridians of the great circle. In column D you can identify the latitude

Example 1
Example of a search of the latitude (intersection of great circle)
How to find the latitude (great circle intersecting the meridian 15 ° w)

Choose the method: Cell N7: method 1 = manual ; and Cell N9: 10 waypoints
Column P - Enter the longitude 15°, Column R - Enter w

In column D at wp 1 is indicated: 43 ° 35.5 'N

Example 2: Construction of the rhumb line (along the great circle) to values of different longitudes (....

After setting to manual option 1 (in cell N7), you manually enter only the longitudes
(with Δλ of 6 ° w) in the columns P & R - 1. Manual waypoints

Next to the wp numbers the coordinates of the waypoints are shown in columns D & E
To calculate a simple rhumb line just enter the latitude and longitude of the waypoints.

It is best to erase all yellow cells of columns M till R entered manually if you are n
Caution ! method!

In the example below, the coordinates of the manual wp's 5-6-7-8-9 (in this case the longitudes 39 ° till 63 ° w) will be eras
because the number of waypoints is reduced to 5 (which is less than the previous 10-wp's)

"Chart1" - graph
At the end of data entry, the map of the route is shown in sheet "Chart1" - In case of crossing the meridian 180° a longitu
is displayed. The longitude must be interpreted as λ - 360° ( 200°E = 160°W ; 210°E = 150°W …. Etc. ) !
This is caused by not enabling the macros!

oints
alues of different longitudes (.... every 6 °):
ll R entered manually if you are not using the manual

longitudes 39 ° till 63 ° w) will be erased automatically,

0-wp's)
