Automatic Barrier System Design & Installation

The document describes a project to design and install an automatic barrier system at Bells University of Technology. The system uses a loop detector to sense vehicles and trigger the boom barrier arm to open. It also uses an IP camera to capture vehicle license plate numbers using license plate recognition technology. The system is intended to reduce wait times associated with the manual recording of plate numbers and opening/closing of the boom. It employs a loop detector buried underground to sense vehicles electromagnetically and signal the microcontroller to open the boom barrier.

Title – Design and Installation of an Automatic Barrier System

Abstract - The aim of this project is to design and install an automatic barrier
system for controlling the movement of vehicles in and out of the Bells University
of Technology. The design of this system involves an electromechanical unit onto
which a boom arm is attached and controlled either to open or close based on the
signal sent from the microcontroller. It uses a loop detector for sensing the
presence of vehicle and an IP configured Camera for capturing the plate number
using the license plate recognition (LPR) technology. This project will help to
reduce the waiting time associated with the manual process of recording plate
numbers and opening/closing the boom.

Methodology –This project employs the loop detection method for sensing the
vehicle. The loop detector can sense vehicles above it and trigger the boom barrier
arm to rise, but in the event of an unauthorized vehicle, pushbutton is pressed to
override the command from the loop detector. The loop detector operates on the
principle of electro-magnetic induction.

The loop consists of two to three turns of wire buried underground a few inches.
In between the loop and the controller is the lead-in cable which serves as the
transmission line. This lead-in cable is twisted to reduce interference of the
transmitting signals. The lead-in cable carries information to the electronic unit of
the system. This electronic circuit output is fed into the panel of the boom barrier.
The system operation time is around three seconds.
