Schedule of Teaching Activities for Individual Stream

3D CAD Tools
Stream Coordinator: Mr. Chris Nash
Lecturer: Mr. Paul Bingham
3D CAD software (SolidWorks) available from Chris Nash.
Important Notes:
1. Please collect your software from Building Y2.34 at Kingswood Campus
2. Please setup your SCEM account before the workshop at Building Y2.34 at Kingswood Campus
General description:
The goal of this stream is to get familiar with 3D CAD tools by using different techniques, operations, functions to create part assemblies and
material lists in a drawing layout.
Please installed the software in your laptop before the

Abaqus Applications in Structural Engineering

Lecturer: Dr Olivia Mirza
General description:
This course is a comprehensive and unified introduction to the modelling and analysis capabilities of Abaqus. It teaches you how to solve linear
and nonlinear problems, submit and monitor analysis jobs and view simulation results using the interactive interface of Abaqus. This stream is
organised as follows:
Part 1: Abaqus fundamental
Part 2: Student will need to select one of the project from stream coordinator by week 5 of the semester

MATLAB Fundamentals (Electrical Engineering and Telecommunications)

Lecturer: Dr Upul Gunawardana
The goal of this module is to get acquainted with MATLAB basic computer-user interfaces, data entry techniques, operations, functions,
mathematical expressions, programming techniques and symbolic maths operations using MATLAB.
MATLAB provides very good online help. There are number of MATLAB tutorials available on the Internet and also large number of textbooks
available on MATLAB in the UWS library.

Recommended Textbooks:
1. Gilant, A. (2007) MATLAB An Introduction With Applications (3 ed), Wiley, New York
2. Moore, H 2011, MATLAB for Engineers, Pearson Education, Upper Saddle River, NJ.
3. Valentine, DT & Hahn, BD 2007, Essential MATLAB for engineers and scientists, 3rd edn, Butterworth Heinemann, Amsterdam; London

We will be using the MATLAB tutorial provided by Mathworks (with permission from Mathworks) and MATLAB built-in help as our required
learning resources for this module.
MATLAB Fundamentals module is organised as follows:
1. Introduction to MATLAB
2. Programming in MATLAB
3. Symbolic Maths using MATLAB

Modelling Aquatic systems with Aquasim software for Environmental Engineering

Stream Coordinator: Prof. (Sathaa) Arumugam Sathasivan
Lecturer: Dr. George Kastl
Environmental Engineering profession deals with modelling and simulation of environmental systems. One of the most prominent systems is the
water environment where chemical, microbiological and physical interactions occur. The course explains the fundamentals of mathematical
modelling of aquatic systems with chemical reactions. Concepts of chemical kinetics, system mass balance, components balance and
characteristic of a basic type or reactors are explained and some are modelled into Aquasim software. Apart from simulation, the software also
has the capacity to estimate the model parameters from experimental data. At the end of the course the student should be able to derive a model
of back mixed and plug flow reactor, analyse experimental data, have feel for a suitable kinetic model and estimate parameters for that model.
The taught principles should be applicable for a broad range of mathematical modelling of engineering systems.
Aquasim is free software ([Link] for simulation of aquatic systems. The software is capable of
modelling kinetics and equilibrium in mixed and plug flow reactors.
