RCC Column Design Specifications

The document summarizes the design of a reinforced concrete column that is 300 mm x 450 mm in size and has an effective length of 3.5 m. It is checked for slenderness and found to be short. The required area of steel is calculated to be 705.2 mm2. The provided area of steel is 1080 mm2 using 4 #12 bars and 4 #16 bars. Minimum eccentricity values are calculated and used to find design moments of 34.8 kNm and 20.66 kNm. Interaction ratios are checked and found to be safe. Lateral ties of 8 mm diameter bars at 180 mm spacing are specified.

Design of RCC Column

Data:
Size of the column = 300 mm x 450 mm
Effective length = 3.5 m
Concrete grade = M25
Steel grade = Fe500
Factored Axial load, Pu = 982.85 kN
Factored moment, Mz = 13.17 kNm
Factored moment, My = 1 kNm
Check for slenderness:
Z direction = Leff / D
= 3500 / 450
= 7.78 < 12, the column is short in Z direction
Y direction = Leff / B
= 3500 / 300
= 11.67 < 12, the column is short in Y direction
Minimum eccentricity:
ez = (Le / 500) + (D / 30 )
= (3500 / 500) + (450 / 30)
= 22mm > 20mm, ez = 22 mm
ey = ( 3500 / 500 ) + (300 / 30)
= 17mm < 20mm, ey = 20 mm
ez = 22 mm < 0.05 * 450 (= 22.5 mm)
ey = 20 mm > 0.05 * 300 (= 15 mm)
So, we take the Asc,required from STAAD result.
Calculation of Puz:
Asc,required (from STAAD) = 705.2 mm2
Minimum Asc,provided (0.8%) = 1080 mm2

Area of concrete, Ac = (450 * 300) - (1080)

= 133920 mm2
Puz = 0.45 * fck * Ac + 0.75 * fy * Asc
= 1911.6 kN
Moments due to minimum eccentricity:
Mez = 0.022 * 982.85
= 21.63 kNm
Mey = 0.020 * 982.85
= 19.66 kNm
Final design moments:
Muz = 13.17 + 21.63
= 34.8 kNm
Muy = 1 + 19.66
= 20.66 kNm
Check for interactions (SP 16):
P/fck = 0.8/25
= 0.032
Pu/(fckbD) = 982.85 / (25 * 300 * 450)
= 0.29
d’/D = (40 + 8 + (16*0.5)) / 450
= 0.124, take it as 0.15
Muz1/(fckbD2)= 0.08
Muz1 = 121.5 kNm
d’/b = (40 + 8 + (16*0.5)) / 300
= 0.186, take it as 0.2
Muy1/(fckDb2) = 0.08
Muy1 = 81 kNm
Pu / Puz = 982.85 / 1911.6
= 0.514, n1.5,
Interaction ratio = ((Muz/Muz1)n + (Muy/Muy1)n) < 1
= 0.28 < 1, Hence safe.
Reinforcement details:
Asc = 1080 mm2,
Provide 4 nos of 12 mm diameter bar and 4 nos of 16 mm diameter bar,
Asc,provided = 1256 mm2 , Pt = 0.93%
Lateral ties:
Tie bars diameter:
0.25 x 16 = 4 or
= 8 mm,
Hence provide 8 mm bars.
Tie bars spacing:
1. Least lateral dimension = 300 mm or
2. 16 x 12 = 192 mm or
3. 300 mm
Hence provide 180 mm c/c spacing.
Adopt 8 mm diameter ties at 180 mm c/c spacing.
