Strength and Efficiency of Lap Joint

The document discusses the strength of a lap joint held together with 20mm diameter grade 4.6 bolts connecting two steel plates of grades Fe 410 that are 10mm and 12mm thick. It provides the material properties for the steel and bolts. It states that the bolts are in single shear and bearing, with the bearing strength governed by the thinner 10mm plate. It proceeds to calculate the strength of the bolts in single shear.

Example 3

Determine the strength and efficiency of the lap joint shown in

Fig. The bolts are of 20 mm diameter and of grade 4.6. The two
plates to be jointed are 10 mm and 12 mm thick (steel is of grade Fe 410).
Solution
For Fe 410 grade of steel: fu = 410 MPa
For bolts of grade 4.6: fub = 400 MPa

For 20 mm diameter bolt: Anb = 245 mm2

dh and do = 22 mm
γmb = partial safety factor for material of bolt = 1.25
γm1 = partial safety factor for resistance governed by
ultimate stress = 1.25

The bolts will be in single shear and bearing. The bearing

strength of the bolt will be governed by the thickness of the
thinner plate. Hence, t = 10 mm.
