Crushed rocks are natural rocks crushed into different sizes. Rock dust is very fine dust created during crushing. Gravel is a type of coarse-grained soil similar to crushed stone. Materials used in Earthworks (FILL AND BACKFILL):

 Fill and backfill material shall consist of select material obtained from the excavation, imported
material, granular bedding material, or unclassified material.
ROCK PRODUCTS

 CRUSHED ROCKS- natural rock that is crushed by machinery and then sorted and screened into

different groups depending on size and components.

 ROCK DUST- This is the very fine dust, similar to sand, that is created as the stone is crushed.
Stone dust is useful when tamping or packing stone, but it causes problems for applications where
water needs to drain, such as behind a retaining wall.
 GRAVEL (Coarse Grained Soil)- Similar to crushed stone because it is a type of rock, but
gravel is produced naturally.

 SAND- is a key component of a properly backfilled hole or trench in that it provides drainage and
compacts well, especially when damp.
